datsunjunkie
Hi guys and gals... New to the forum... What i have for sale is rebuilt datsun 280zx 5 speed transmissions, Normally pulled from a 1982-83 280zx, best gearing for the L-series motors, These transmissions are professionally rebuilt from a shop who has over 40 years in rebuilt all kinds of transmission over the years and has been rebuilding mine for the pass 5 years with no flaws. I normally sell on other sites but i was requested my a fellow memeber of RATSUN to try selling transmission here... The trannys will have 0 miles on them and 0 oil so it's starting life all over again, and will come bare so you'll need throwout bearing, slave cyl,fork,shifter.... ECT, just use everything that comes from your previous transmission and you'll be set. I have a few of these transmissions and some are in the shop being rebuilt and i also have a 9 to 5 job so please understand if i can't ship the next day but i will be able to ship normally by the weekend. $600.00 plus $95.00 shipped anywere in the upper 48 states USA ONLY!!!! 2 Link to comment
I'm BLUE
Pardon my ignorance if it is the case ... but that picture doesnt look like a 280zx 5-speed. Is this an actual picture of the transmission for sale ? Thankyou Dtp Link to comment
datzenmike
My L series 71B front case taken 3 min ago. Would have to say it's an L series. This is consistent with an '80 or newer 5 speed. I suppose it could be from an '80 2wd 720 or a Maxima but would need a picture of the other side. Simplest thing would be to mark the input and output spline. Place in 5th gear and turn the input exactly 20 times while someone counts the output spline turns. If its an '80 zx 5 speed the output will turn 15.46 or just barely under 15 1/2 times If it's an '81-'83zx 5 speed it will turn 14.9 or about 15 times. . Link to comment

Stoffregen Motorsports
I posted earlier but i don't see my post here. Anyway, I need one for my father in law's 240Z. My question was, do they all look that clean, in other words bead blasted? That one looks like a 280Z box not a ZX box. I can tell by the cast iron front cover inside the bellhousing, all the ZX's I've seen had a cast aluminum piece. So how do we know exactly what we are purchasing? Link to comment
datzenmike
Two things make this transmission an '80 or newer. It has the reverse check sleeve and the higher position shifter ears. Stoffregen Motorsports
Right, but I'm referring to the heading of "280ZX 5-speed". I want the correct ratios and I know they had a couple different ratios in those years, but if it's a 280ZX box that narrows it down. Link to comment
240zdogg
Best way to tell the 5 speed apart is too it... 1. Look and the shifter ears... the tall ones are the better ones. 2. Look direct down at what i call "EARS" (holds/bolts on the exhaust) if theres 2... stay away, if 1 only (drivers side) its a 82-83. 3. Look for the fill plug, if is on the drivers side... stay away, its a wide ratio (MAXIMA) if driver side... grab it. This transmission im selling is a 1982-83 280zx... noting else. Link to comment

Yes but all 71B transmissions after June '79 had these. Finding tall shift ears just means it could be for a zx. It could also be from a Maxima or a 720. 2. Look direct down at what i call "EARS" (holds/bolts on the exhaust) if theres 2... stay away, if 1 only (drivers side) its a 82-83. Yes but all 71B transmissions after June '79 had a single EAR on the driver's side. Finding only one EAR on the driver's side just means it could be for a zx. It could also be from a Maxima or a 720. 3. Look for the fill plug, if is on the drivers side... stay away, its a wide ratio (MAXIMA) if driver side... grab it. This transmission im selling is a 1982-83 280zx... noting else. Generally. I've found this ....true but, would never rely on fill plug location alone and would include other evidence. I have a 5 speed from a 620 with the drain on the pass side. In addition the Maxima didn't have a wide ratio transmission, (but everything is relative) at best it has a mid ratio compared to the 280zx. The only 71B transmissions with the 0.773 and 0.745 overdrives are in the '80-'83 non turbo 280zx. The only absolutely sure way to identify a possible candidate is to mark the input and output spline. Place in 5th gear and turn the input exactly 20 times while someone counts the output spline turns. If its an '80 zx 5 speed (0.773 OD) the output will turn 15.46 or just barely under 15 1/2 times If it's an '81-'83zx 5 (0.745 OD) speed it will turn 14.9 or about 15 times. Link to comment
darrel
There were 2 different size ears for the zx 5 spd and another for the 4 spd. The 4 spds were the shortest, then a medium length then the taller ones came on the 82-83 zx non turbo. That has been my experience with them while hunting for 5 spds. The pic does look a little odd, but I think it is the setting on the camera, the tranny looks a little short or maybe the camera angle. Link to comment
datzenmike
The 4 and 5 speed shift ears may be slightly different heights but the shift cross pin height locations were the same height till about '82 on the 280zx and Maximna, '82 on the 200sx and mid '83 on the 720s '79 280zx 5 speed '85 720 .
