datsunfish Posted April 11, 2008 Report Share Posted April 11, 2008 Run the cable out the side of the truck and roll a bit to see if it is turning.If not then take it off and the cable should come out in 2 pieces.If the cable is good its likely the tranny.If its moving take out the dash assy. and check the input for rust.I had to free up the 1 in my 521. dat521gatherer Posted April 11, 2008 Report Share Posted April 11, 2008 my cable was good but something in my tranny was going on. i dropped down the gears and rotated the tranny using the rear tires off the ground and stuck a flat tip up there to turn the gears.reassembled. fixed whatever the problem was for a while. later my speedo cable broke my speedometer cause the cable was going in too far. take out the speedo gear with the 10mm locking plate and look up into the tranny with a flashlight. while spinning the rear tires see if the gears are moving in the tranny. that will give an idea of what's going on. you'll need someone to turn the tires while you look inside the tranny at the gear. oops do this second. first see if the speedo gear at the 10mm locking plate is turning while rotating the tires before taking it out of the tranny. if it doesn't turn pop it out and take a look and turn the wheels again. somewhere something isn't turning. good luck Quote Link to comment
datzenmike Posted April 11, 2008 Report Share Posted April 11, 2008 The speedo cog is driven directly off the worm gear cut into the output shaft. If the rear wheels turn the output shaft has to be turning. Unhook the dash end and have someone raise and turn the rear wheels. This will test the cog and the inner cable all at once. The cable should turn. If it does turn the speedo in the dash isn't working or stuck. If not turning, un-hook the tranny end and pull out enough flex cable to insert back into speedo cog to engage it. Turn rear wheels again. If cable turns, pull cable out of sheath as it must be broken inside. If it doesn't turn, something is wrong with the plastic cog. If this was working and suddenly stopped it's most likely the cable. banzai510(hainz) Posted April 11, 2008 Report Share Posted April 11, 2008 my 521 the speedo did not work. loosen 10mm bolt to pull speedo pinion and the teeth were sheared off. what happen the smooth shaft part it fit in got gaulled for some reason. or pc of metal and locked up. shear the plastic worm gear(designed that way) Pull another form a 510 trans. I assume its the wrong teeth count but works OK. Im 5mph off on the speedo Quote Link to comment

I just use those "how fast are you going?" signs the city has around town and figure out what the motor sounds like at that speed.:eek: I make several passes at different speeds to get it down.:lol::lol: Sucks not having a speedo or tach.:mad: Quote Link to comment
datzenmike Posted April 12, 2008 Report Share Posted April 12, 2008 My 521 lost the speedo one winter so left it for the summer. Found one and changed the inner cable. Broke the next winter. Next summer I removed the whole thing and found a hole in the outer sheath. It would fill with water..... and freeze solid in the winter. Soon as I drive, it would twist the cable and snap in two. MikeRL411 Posted April 12, 2008 Report Share Posted April 12, 2008 One more thing to check if you have a mechanical speedometer and not an electrical / digital one. If you drive the car long enough eventually the braze joint connecting the copper eddy current drag cup to the shaft driving the needle will break. The magnet goes round and round, the cup says "so what". Any speedometer shop can rebraze the joint, some even check the position first so that it reads the correct speed. If the odometer turns but the needle stays put, this is likely the cause. Quote Link to comment
