Tachometer Problems!

ok so i recently purchased a AutoMeter Sport-Comp Monster and I installed it but, I had a problem. It was idling at 0 RPM's but it was reving up to like 1,000 RPM's when I gave it some gas.

Its a L20B engine in a '78 Datsun 620.

 

Do you know what could be the cause of this?

Most aftermarket tachs come set for V8's. They have different methods of adjusting for 4 and 6 cylinders. You might read the literature for the tach you purchased. If you don't have the literature you might be able to download it from the manufacturers website.

or flip the switch on the back that says 4 - 6 - 8 :D

 

I'd say "4" is where you want it

there ident a switch one the back. But I was reading about it and it was saying that this one programs itself. I'll try downloading the program. Hopefully I can download it to my itouch because this is my only Internet source.

with my auto meter I had to clip a wire. I believe it was the orange one but.....don't do it unless it tells ya!

dude, cut both wires and that should set it for four cylinders. if you go to autometer.com, you can down load the wiring diaghram for free.

Anyways Unplug the instrument panel plug, and take a test light to all the wires with the lights turned on.
