Any laptop/IT gurus here?

Recommended Posts

I finally got a new charger for my laptop (hp dv6000), my dog chewed through the last one and I put it away for about 8 months. Before my dog chewed through the chord, I noticed that the battery would not charge when plugged in, but would stay at a constant level. Now that I have it back out, the batter meter says "0% available (plugged in, charging)". It does not rise, it turns off if I unplug it, and I cant figure it out. Ive already uninstalled and reinstalled the battery management software. Ive searched on forums and cant find any solutions. My brother has the same laptop so I tried my battery/charger in his, and his in mine. My battery works and charges in his, his doesnt in mine, so Im thinking it is a problem with my laptop. Any ideas? I dont know a whole lot about computers or laptops, so maybe if you guys have some ideas I can check those out. Thanks.

Its a simple fix, and probably wont work, but try unplugging it, taking out the battery, then holding the power button for 15 seconds. You can then use the laptop again. This should clear all power on the motherboard that may be causing a hangup.

Talk to ElmerFuddPucker. I believe he's pretty knowledgeable about such things.

My last laptop did the same thing.. ended up being something with the motherboard. I bought a new laptop, pulled the old hard drive, and had all the files extracted and put onto my new one.

The circuitry for battery management/charging is built into the laptop itself, not the charger. It'll depend on the laptop, but sometimes they have a separate power supply board that plugs into the motherboard. That board could be bad. A precursory search on ebay suggests that your model doesn't have a separate power supply board, so you may have to replace the whole motherboard to fix it if that's the problem.

Did that already.

Also, if you brother has the same laptop, Try using HIS power cord.

My thoughts are that it is completely hardware related.

Did this too.

Im thinking it may be a diode or something on the mother board. I hope not though.

Last idea for now,

Get a q-tip and rubbing alcohol and clean all the contacts on the battery, and the associated contacts on the computer itself. Check for any bent pins, or dirty pins.

Ill give it a shot. The battery has only been out once since ive owned it, I didnt look at it though.

Thats what Im hoping not to do. If thats the case, it just became a very compact desktop.

Yep, starting to sound like bad charging circuit on the mobo.

I was hoping that your brothers power cord would work. I have plugged power cords into my laptop that wont charge my battery because they are not powerful enough.

But yes it sounds like you now have a living room computer.

thanks for the shout out micro, hp mobo bios+drivers been updated? only other thing off the top of my head, get a battery from Best Buy/Walmart and keep the reciept. if it fixes it the n fine, anouther thing, turn the laptop off all the way then plug it in and leave it overnight, sometimes the battery gets too low and needs to snap out of it. but I have sent a dv4k and a 6k back due to video card and mobo issues, they use tin not lead based soder on the joints so they do break loose.

Battery's go bad ALL the time on electronic devices ,,, Think of the demand of processing power ,,, especially laptops ,,, :)

I barely used my Acer 4730z laptop for the first year I got it ,,, didn't unplug it much ,,, battery died fast ,,, go figure

Ya I've tried all the suggestions I've found on HP and other sites. I don't get it, the charging light comes on, it shows its plugged in, it says its charging, but it doesn't. I wouldn't doubt it if something went out while he was chewing it, I had it plugged in at the time so I know he got a good jolt because it was only half way chewed through lol

In that case I would bet it's the charging circuit on the board. You could open it up and inspect for damage, but chances are you blew an IC or otherwise unmarked component that is going to be impossible to replace short of swapping components from the same model motherboard, in which case you might as well swap the whole board. They look fairly cheap on ebay.
