datsunpilot
I have been told by a fellow New England Datsun owner to post a project build. He says we are a rare breed here in New England. A little back ground on my 510. I purchased it 10 years ago when I was just 16 in 2001. A friend and I were on a trip to Florida and I saw it in the paper for sale. I had never seen one but loved it. I refunded my plane ticket and purchased it for 800 bucks! We drove it home all through the night to get home for classes on Monday. I had great intentions back then for it but at that young age didnt have the money or brains. I tore it down but then stopped. Thankfully so that was around the time fast n the furious came out and the poor car might have fell victim to some ridiculous wing or grafix or something awful. Fast forward 10 years and now I am much wiser (relatively), have a few builds under my belt and have saved some money for the datsun. Although the money saved is all gone now- that happens fast. I am so eager for the day I drive it out of the parking lot The plan. I sold me 87 E30 325is to fund a sr20det black top and some extra goodies. Right now the car is on lift with a pile of parts around it. The plan is... 1971 510 2 door 430,000 miles - L20b previously swapped in but spitting oil with dog leg 5 speed complete with loud bearings - now its time to unswap the L20 and reswap a SR SR20det w/ goodies Custom radiator & intercooler - top mount manifold, hks intake & bov, etc Interior was mint, and still is even though its in boxes. Just new carpet and maybe seats of some sort For the front end I have 280z struts (which I have just learned might not be the correct 280 that I wanted) might be back to the drawing board on them for zx instead of z Ground control coil overs, front shocks are up in the air will take advice. I have all new urethane bushings. Locally shortened driveshaft. We cut and spun the engine cross member and made custom tranny brace. Custom 3" tb exhaust subi dif roll cage bc its a tin can and more... Wanting to get it on the road by summer... so here we go Ive got my work cut out and ill snap pictures as I go "> When I first got it "> sitting with the VG30et I bought in pieces.... thank god I stepped back from that and went with the SR! look at that nightmare "> On the lift ready for the work to start "> empty and ready to go "> sr20det black top "> first test fit with old radiator and junk "> reversed x member "> top mount for the turbo :) now need a bigger turbo then a t25 but itll do for now shes light "> Weds Auto Bahns 15x6 "> Trying on some staggered XXR 15s - they are wide! "> and trying on some 17s "> and my secret goal - to overtake my friends Evo at will... Quote Link to comment
fisch
Nice! I actually know of no SR 510s in New England. Not to say one isn't out there, just never saw it! To put it in perspective as to how unusual they are here, in 4 years I have seen maybe 5 or 6 come up for sale on CL or Ebay in new england. Of those only 4 were on the streetable, and I bought one. Get pics ASAP (Just how it sits right now even!)or the pic hounds will start barking! This link right here will show you how to post pics. Postin pics on Ratsun Quote Link to comment

fisch
Very cool indeed! Nice deep paint. Super solid for any dime in the NE! Not use to seeing body kit stuff on a 510. Interesting! Quote Link to comment

Interesting! Thanks man! I am on the fence about the side skirts and rear lip things... I have never seen them on another one so I might keep them they are unique! I agree though. fisch
Yeah I am not 100% sold on them either, but if you'd put them on, didn't want to knock it, especially on your first post! I am all for personal expression with vehicles! It isn't like they look horrendous. A bit bizarre because I am not used to seeing it... It is kinda funny since you mentioned it in your first post, but it almost seems someone put them on there when Fast and the Furious hit, to update the look a bit. But the thing I embrace about 510 is that they aren't modern car design. That is what makes them neat. In fact I just bought my 510 because I was no longer into the look of the stock body kit on my '89 Suzuki Swift GTi. (Which I am selling if you know someone who wants one! ;)) So if you are on the fence... I vote for removal! A BRE Spook on the front (and a cool rear trunk spoiler can be had from FutoFab in NH if you are itching for something different.) (Dave makes CF and Fiberglass 510 stuff and more!) Futofab Link But again, if you dig them, keep rocking them! This is a sweet dime in really nice shape man! (And I am jealous of all those wheels.) Quote Link to comment
bonvo
what happened to the vg? Quote Link to comment
datsunpilot
Fisch - Wow I have looked at the futofab stuff before on ebay and fumbled across it on google - little did I know he is less then an hour from me thats awesome. Why on earth is someone in NH making those things? I have a rear wing for it but my chin spoiler got thrown away... bad story - I am liking the spook more then the dobi I think. Bonvo - I sold the VG to someone in VT for his non turbo 300zx Quote Link to comment
fisch
Yeah I am shocked FutoFab is here too! (Dave was one of the limited 510 guys I was talking about!) Interesting note, Dave sold his rear spoiler to the guys filming the new Transformers movie with teh 510 in it. Pretty cool!) I much prefer the spook too. I dig that Dave's have the functional vents for the brakes! I'd love to get a full CF set from him! Fenders to trunk! Check out Jun's Wagon build too. He used a VW duckbill and it looks f'n sweet and clean. (And I guess they are pretty affordable!) Quote Link to comment
datsunpilot
I didnt know there would be a 510 in the new movie. Thats awesome I am pumped! Now that I know futofab has the spook Im gonna get it for sure. I am selling some stuff off my diesel to fund this so...wish me luck haha Unfortunately there are other things to figure out... Quote Link to comment

datsunpilot
Bring back a dead thread.... car is now on the road and until snow falls is my daily driver. I have probably put about 500 miles on it with little to no issues (first day we drove it we were brave and took it about 80 miles down to the New England Dragway for a car show and on the way the fuel pressure regulator kept getting debris from the tank in it and making it run poorly but we got that taken car of other then that shes mint! Thanks everyone for the help during the build and the help I am sure I will ask for in the future to come. Here are some more photos of build and after and hopefuly I can post a vid :) Datsun 510 - Valance by datsun pilot, on Flickr The previous owner had riveted panels over the front valance vents and then bondo'd over them - which had cracked and looked terrible - gotta go! yellowdatsun
Too bad you gave up on the VG30ET. They make an stupid amount of horsepower, tons of torque, and are nearly bullet proof. A couple guys around here have them, they make you crap your pants. Nice job on the SR20 swap though, looks good. The gold 7 spokes look sweet. You should take the trunk lid, and redo the graphics in paint so it's permanent. Quote Link to comment

Thanks man I am quite happy with it - its been a long time coming! 10 years! I am going to clear coat the trunk and see how that holds up with UVs and what not. Its pretty permanent. I wish the VG would have worked out bc thats an awesome bullet proof motor but I bought it in pieces and it was missing too many things unfortunately it would have been a super headache - if I took it apart and knew what was what totally different story very cool, glad you got rid of the ground fx. I have been trying to get my niece to sharpie my trunk and engine bay for the longest time. Aww man the engine bay would be so sweet! I might do a few more small things. I just did as a temporary thing for the car show that weekend and myself and everyone thinks I should keep it. I might do something else like valance or hood or mirror or little stuff - but engine bay would be killer Quote Link to comment
dennis
my niece is actually not going to do it with a sharpie, she is going to do it with some other paint markers. Quote Link to comment
