You can eliminate the external regulator by swapping in an IR (Internally Regulated) alternator from most Nissan cars from '78 on. The IR alternators will be marked LR. External regulated alternators will be marked LT. You cannot run an IR alternator with the external regulator. The external regulator must be unplugged. Further, the old regulator plug must have two jumper wires added to it to make it work and to allow the red CHARGE light to work.

 

Sources for a 50/60 amp IR alternator would be a....

'78-'79 200sx (S10)

'80-'83 200sx (S110)

'78-'81 510 (A10)

'81 and up 710 truck

 

They will likely be marked LR-150 (50amp) or LR-160 (60amp)
