nick_m
Been lurking round here for a bit and due to suffering from a serious case of the man flu I can't be bothered doing much off anthing so I thought its time to start a thread! This is the going to be a big post, i've been working on it for about 5 years on and off now so have heaps of pictures! Car as I got it, A $500 runner with WOF and REGO but no chance of passing its next inspection due to rust Mounted the motor and a few other little bits and pieces and then had the shell sand blasted and primered At the shop with my friends one I had to do lots of rust repairs Car with a set of 14 by 6.5 genuine starsharks. I ended up selling these to a friend for his 510, I will probably import the same wheels is a 13x7 Engine Crossmember Tubes hold nolathane front spring eye bushes Quote Link to comment
nick_m
s14 sr20de Decided to build a drop tank because the car was so low and witht the big diff I shortened the diff head would have made a hump in the boot floor. So I made on for it to clear which mean the tank couldn't really stay where it was (behind the rear seat, same as 510) Modified a nissan intank pump to fit the tank Connected to factory filler, so hopefully no stinky petrol smells S13 wiper motor Nissan in there infinite glory kept the wiper arm the same only had to enlarge the hole and weld knew nuts on as it had a different bolt pattern Quote Link to comment
nick_m
Started making a sheet metal pedal box for reverse cylinders. Nearly finished it. Went a bit overboard its not as light as I'd hoped it was going to be. Laser cut up a panel to mount the s13 instrument panel into datsun dash Made my own octopus extactors Its a close fit! Also made my own merge collectors for it Scallop out a section so the two pieces fit together nice Cleaned up and welded together First time it had looked complete in a couple of years so thought i better snap some pictures of it. This was just before we moved into our house at the start of the year. mk1 golf spoiler Testing 13's :D Quote Link to comment
nick_m
Redid my setback a month or so ago as I wasn't overly happy with the first one. I like this one better. My welding/fab was a lot better by this point too Started mounting race seats Modified shift to suit race seat position, original lever was too far back and low for my liking How the engine bay looks now. Just realsed I don't have any front suspension pictures. I have converted to coilver front end with camber plates and shortened inverted bilsteins. Rear is reverse eyed leaves and bilstein shocks Some of the other ratsun i've owned This was a wagon I got given. It doesn't look to ad in the pics but the a pillar sill area was so rusted out from sitting in a paddock for 10 years that you could nearly bend it down to the ground! Many of its parts ended up on other datsuns, with the right rear quarter going onto my mates 2 door wagon Mint little old lady sunny I owned, stayed like that the whole time I owned it, I regret selling it now! I was only the third owner A12 auto. It was definitely no rocket ship but man it was comfy to cruise around in :D Current daily driver Its just running standard b310 steels with the chrome wheel trims now as those 13" wheels where buckled to hell Hope you like :D Quote Link to comment
808DA6
Nice! Can't wait to see the progression. Not many 1200 guys here that go wild. -Brian Quote Link to comment

nick_m
yeah 1200 wagon's are pretty rare here too. Its a shame it wasn't in better condition. My friend has one with a ca18det in it. Which should be running soon! A guy brought it to put the running gear into a morris minor (not sure if you got them there, poxy litttle british car) as its quite a common conversion. Brought a minor and the wagon, put them in the paddock and then forgot about them for 10 years! All the frosts and wet weather over the years took its toll and it was wel beyond restoration. But its parts live on in several local 1200's! Quote Link to comment
M.Creer
Updates? Quote Link to comment
nick_m
Not alot unfortunately. The poor thing got worked on for the first time in two months! Have started the roll cage, i've done the main hoop and front legs and rear stays. Then found out that they changed the regs last month and I now need a bigger diameter main hoop! so will sort that out in the new year. Once thats done its really only brakes and a wire away from running. That'll be a big day!! Hopefully I can get it running by Feb/March. Then I have to mount all the little crap like gauges and paint it but might try sneak it out for a track day or sneaky event in primer and multi coloured panels before I strip it down for paint over winter. Abe Froman
Cool! Is it an SR16DE engine? Nick_m posted that it is a S14 SR20DE. Quote Link to comment
nick_m
Yeah as Abe said just a s14 silvia sr20de.......... But I do have a sr20ve which I'll convert to rwd and run on ITB's with some big cams and 12.5:1 CR. mmmmm :D Have all the bits required for the build except the ITB's. Thats phase 2 though! I also want to build a flow bench before the motor too so I can port the head (and hopefully generate a little cash doing others too) Too many things to do and not enough time!! 1 Quote Link to comment
INDY510
. My Dream Car!!!!! ......... I've always wanted a Datsun 1200 wagon I'm assuming you're in Australia??? ......... How rare are the wagons??? ........ How much would a nice drivable wagon cost??? ...... are there alot more sedans availible than wagons??? Quote Link to comment
NZDatsunchris
Australia!!!!! Nick and myself are New Zealand boys! My wagon cost me NZ $ 800. They can range from that up to 5000 depending on condition. There are plenty more sedans than wagons here too Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
New Zealand is about the only place to find the Datsun 1200 2-door wagons these days. You can find them on Trademe from time to time. Quote Link to comment
nick_m
yup for some reason 2 door wagons seem to be a little more common than 4 wagons here. Not sure which was offered locally but sedan's were all sold new as four doors. All RHD 2 door sedans are imports NZ is pretty lucky as far as Datsun go, they were quite a common little car back in the day, but rust and or abuse has destroyed alot of them. The old(er) guys at work tell stories of when they were teenagers they used to get the buy sell swap and buy a $100 datsun (because they were worth nothing back then, they were just "Jap Crap") and go paddock race them and crash them and jump them etc until they would go anymore! They all used to love the datsuns because the motors lasted the longest! I think outside japan, Aussie definitely got the best selection of datsun models though, they were locally assembled (as they were in NZ too) for years. Oh how'd i'd love a Datsun 1000 (B10) Quote Link to comment
The Dat-side
Fuuuuuuuuuu! This is a sexy thread! I wana see more. Quote Link to comment
nick_m
Wow, havent updated this forum in quite a long time! So things got a bit out of hand since my last post. Ended up a full blown race car. Sold the SR20de and put in an SR20VE with ITBS 4 Linked the rear end and built a full cage. Hopefully not long now and it will get a flick of paint. Just exhaust, flares and a little seam welding/general tidy up underneath and the assembly plumbing and wiring can begin hers how it looks today Quote Link to comment
deathrace2000
Awesome thread. That header rocks. More updates! Quote Link to comment
nick_m
Unfortunately that header was for the sr20de, it was also speccd for a road motor. Now that ive changed motor and it will be a built motor i have to make a new header. It will probably be a little more conventional looking too haha Quote Link to comment
