What are the typical reasons the light is on?

The IGN light is nothing more than the alternator light. When it's on, the alternator or regulator is bad, or the incorrect alternator is installed (IR with the ext reg still hooked up, etc)

Ive got the same issue but my charge is good and the lights never dim... it can only be the alt?

Mike, if the voltage regulator is still bolted to the side of the engine bay the alt. is external.

the one with the black cage is external , the right could be either

They're both external. Just the one on the right is the Mitsubishi type, and the left is the Hitachi type. Interchangeable for the most part, I've seen both.

You all forgot to mention that if the belt is loose or cut the light will come on . :D

ok so the belt is tight. I swapped out the alternator I had for another spare and did the cheater alternator test. Pull the negative on the battery and see if it keeps running, it did (with the old alt it shut off). so the light is still on. Thoughts?

ck every now and then to make sure battery dont OOZ out acid. Sign of cooking the battery. cl water level.

 

I have been noticing my battery oozing water/electrolyte. So does this mean my regulator is shot and also the reason my IGN light is on?
