beubank
well ,I finally got er home. I will take some more pics this week,,,has a small spot rusted through by the batt. I was considering leaving it original, but since original 520s arent worth that much anyway, here is what i have planned Frame off restoration Dual A-arm conversion in front New axle with disc brakes 5 lug wheels. 17s or 18s airbags, simple up down L20 or KA24, NA 5sp tranny paint, leaving body as orig as possible, Dragon green or red. Basicall a nice custom driver, nothing too radical Suggestions? Quote Link to comment
CharlieBucket
cool truck, can't wait to see what you do to it. what's up with the 620 camper beside it? you should post pics of that also. Quote Link to comment
beubank
the camper actually is for the 520. The 620 came with it,,,it is rusted,,,,,,BAD,,totally unsalvageable. Its a 79, so i may use the motor and tranny,,,both run GREAT, no smoke. 520 needs brakes or i would probably drive it. Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
How is the frame on that 620? Quote Link to comment
beubank
i thought it might bo ok but at first inspection its pretty bad,,,above the front hangers is rustd through Quote Link to comment
fisch
Awesome lil rig man. Can't wait to follow your progress. Especially the 5 lug conversion. Quote Link to comment
beubank
gotta do some measuring,,,,anyone done a IRS on the back...thinkin about a 80s supra rear end. Front suspension will be custom built with probably toyota spindles and hubs,,I want the 5x4.5 pattern to run the wheels I want, or I would do S10 stuff,,,,S10s have HUGE front hubs Quote Link to comment
JWilk_SD
Funny, I have the same year model 520 and one of the few places I have rust is a small hole under the battery holder. They must have had a battery that vented and driped onto the fender well. Quote Link to comment
71-521
anyone done a IRS on the back.yup: Quote Link to comment
pope_face
Just out of curiosity, you will need to adjust the camber with IRS if you change the height of the truck, correct? Quote Link to comment
irsa76
Yep. Never thought about a 510 rear end in a P/U before. Quote Link to comment
fisch
71-521 Hope you don't mind but this info was so cool I put it in the How To section. Can you tell us what mag this came from? Thanks for showing this! Quote Link to comment
beubank
i thought about a 510 or a 240/280 rear, but they are all 4 lug. Great article ,,,definately gives me some ideas Main reason to do IRS is to get the rear lower without a cut bed. Quote Link to comment
pope_face
Hmm... how low can you go with IRS in the rear and not cut into the bed? I'm considering airbags and want to know my options... but, the only issue would be camber. Is there any way to do this in order to get a height-adjustable setup that won't need camber adjustment? Jester
Funny this should come up. A freind called me the other day and asked if I wanted to buy his 300zx. It just sits outside his house with the T-tops busted out and the windows down. Perfect way to store it in Oregon. I thought about the possibility of putting the entire runing gear under my 521. Jester Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
I'm pretty sure the 300 is several inches wider.....you might want to check that before committing to the car. Quote Link to comment
pope_face
You could always flare the fenders like that one 521 in the gallery... the grey/unfinished one with the red window... :D Quote Link to comment
Jester
You could always flare the fenders like that one 521 in the gallery... the grey/unfinished one with the red window... :D Hmmmm, let me think about that..........Naaaaa. Mike; I hadn't thought about the 300 being wider. I would imagine that the distance between the mounts is wider, but, what about the front arms themselves? Some new mounts on the 521 frame to accept them. Steering and such. A 510 rear would be sweet. I abviously don't know the particulars like a lot of you, I just got to day dreaming one day and thought that could be one hell of a truck on the twisties. Jester Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Front suspension on the 300 is a strut style setup. It can be done but fab will be involved. Quote Link to comment
pope_face
Would the solid axle rear be noticably worse than IRS on winding roads, or is it the suspension that will make or break the setup? I can see maybe the "inside" wheel (on a solid axle) losing a bit of traction on a curve, but that would only really make a difference at high speeds or on a sharp curve, correct? 71-521
can't remember what it's from....I think it was on the Addler pages awhile ago.... Quote Link to comment
Jester
I called the guy today about the 300zx he had. He GAVE it away!!! What an a$$hole! :D It was a non turbo with a V6 and 5spd. Jester Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
I'd say drive the solid axle first and prove that it won't do what you want. Once you put a big sway bar on an IRS, it will feel more like a solid anyway. Quote Link to comment
Jester
I SHOULD just get it running and drive it. :D I have a tendancy to go all out on stuff. I have to constantly remind myself, THIS IS GOING TO BE YOUR DAILY DRIVER DUMMY!! Jester Quote Link to comment
