There are two styles of EI (electronic ignition) distributors, the remote igniter and the matchbox. The first was used on California vehicles starting around '76 and on all Datsuns in '78. It used a reluctor and stator coil to pick up a magnetic signal. The signal was sent to a box inside the cab of the vehicle to be amplified and the resultant signal sent back out to the coil to fire it. There were 5-6 wires going to a 5" X 4" X 1" box. This system was called the 'remote igniter' because of the electronics box mounted inside the car. In '79 the remote box was miniaturized down to a smaller 1 .5" square 'match box' size and mounted on the outside of the distributor. The internal stator and reluctor were also improved. Both work about the same and are very reliable. The matchbox are neater looking and easier to install without the remote box to worry about. If you have a remote igniter distributor (dizzy) you can wire a GM HEI module to it and mount it inside the engine compartment. Here is a remote igniter box and dizzy. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Nissan%20Electrical/DatsunEI006Large.jpg[/img]"] http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Nissan%20Electrical/EIdizzyremoteigniter.jpg[/img]"] Here is the matchbox dizzy inside. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Nissan%20Electrical/EIdizzymatchbox.jpg[/img]"] Outside. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Nissan%20Electrical/DatsunEI005Large.jpg[/img]"] The matchbox requires only two wires. One for 12 volts and one to the coil to fire it. The matchbox must be securely grounded to work properly. The 4 cylinder L series matchbox dizzy was used on all '79 and '80 L20B motors. No matchbox or remote igniter was used on the L16/18 motors. '79 200sx, 620, A10 '80 720 Edited August 28, 2009 by datzenmike Link to comment
