DATSUNgeo
Has anybody ever used Kydex for door cards? I am thinking of coping/cloning my Datsun 620 to match the Camo HOTWHEELS car (pictured below). I can source camo Kydex and had the idea of using it for the door cards, kick panels, firewall panel, and possibly a large panel for roof liner. However, I'm not sure how well it will hold up to UV exposure. Has anybody ever used Kydex in any application where it was exposed to UV rays for extended periods of time? How did it hold up, any major fading? Thanks guys, much appreciated! Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Haven't used it. Tried to search for UV resistance or fading of black Kydex, but didn't come up with any satisfactory answers 🤷♂️ Quote Link to comment
DATSUNgeo
I didn’t find any information on how well it holds up to UV exposure either. I think I’ll call up Kydex and ask. I was just wondering if anyone has had real world experiences with it. Quote Link to comment
fiveoneO
Not sure if you tried this yet or not, but we have tried using Kydex as a floor protector and it tends to warp in direct sunlight. Quote Link to comment
Skib
If it doesn't, just shoot it with some automotive clear or some air dry cerekote. Both will add UV protection. 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
I would like to start using some sort of plastic sheet for the card under the upholstery. The cheap MDF-like card that upholstery shops use does not hold up well in moist conditions. So I have to ask - why KYDEX? Is there something in particular about it that you guys like? My only criteria is that the upholstery shop staples can penetrate the card. Is KYDEX soft? Hard? Formable? 1 Quote Link to comment

Just because he can get kydex material already camo pattern it seems. It's a good formable thermoplastic, most of my pistol holsters are made of kydex. 2 Quote Link to comment

I use 3M spray glue, spray the board then use 5mil painters plastic, I trim the edges with a 3'' overlap. I re glue the door plastic. you can get that tar like adhesive at most auto body supply. http://macsdist.com/about-us/ @DATSUNgeo I would think it would be fine. I've left my holster in direct AZ summer sunlight without issue and IMO the best way to find out is to try it. Be confident. I think it'll look dope. 1 Quote Link to comment
