Who art thy Brother's valve keeper

Recommended Posts

After spending an embarrassing amount of time searching for consistent valve keeper (aka valve retainer, valve lock) information, both in the FSM and on the WWW, I seek guidance.

The problem: I do not trust ebay sellers  (or most online sellers) to provide accurate part interchange information. My distrust is magnified, when "official" websites provide conflicting information and the part price doubles, or triples depending on the seller. A final difficulty, I have been unable to locate the part, within the FSM.

I seek valve keepers for a Z24. If the specifications of the valve keepers are in the FSM for my 1984 720, then please tell me where to look.

So far, the two valve keeper options that have the most support are the Melling VL1110 and the Sealed Power VK215, more than one website claims the two aforementioned are interchangeable. However, that claim is unlikely, as more than one source provides different specifications of the two retainers e.g. the retainers are listed as 7 degree and the other 14 degree.

Nissan part numbers (I think) are 13210-U0100, 13210-00100, 13210-73400 (All numbers for the same part)

I was able to find the most information/interchange with the Nissan part numbers with the Melling VL1110.

The specifications of the Melling:

  • Angle (Deg): 14 Degree

  • Material: Stainless Steel

  • Inside Diameter (in): 0.310 Inch

  • Inside Diameter (mm): 7.87mm

  • Length (in): 0.316 Inch

  • Length (mm): 8.02mm

  • Outside Diameter (in): 0.444 Inch

  • Outside Diameter (mm): 11.28mm

  • Thickness (mm): 1.52mm

  • Thickness (in): 0.060 Inch

  • Number Of Grooves: 1

  • Lock Type: Inside

Specifications of the Sealed Power retainers listed by datsun1200 as one of the valve locks listed as "interchangeable".

Valve Spring Retainer Keeper (Valve lock) * Stem diameter 0.252 * 7 degree angle * SEALED POWER Part # VK215 * BECK/ARNLEY Part # 0230045

Interchange
* Datsun Z-series

The Comp. Cam website has a large selection, but the parts are listed by dimensions, rather than part numbers.

Which seller is providing accurate information? Is there a Comp Cam option?

Your insight is appreciated

Is there some reason why you can't use the original ones that were on the engine???????? They don't wear out and don't need replacing.

You unearthed one of my troubles, but, more probably than not, I will consummate collet acquisition with NissanPartsDeal.

There is a good argument that I am being a bitch about this, in my defense, those selling the “collets”, or “locks” or “retainers”, or whatever, started it by creating bitchy purchasing policies.

NissanPartsDeal

Bitchy policy #1 – Pricing the collets by halves. No one is buying half a collet, so double the price, which isn’t much, it is just bitchy to do and when someone (like me) mentions it, then we become bitchy too.

Bitchy policy #2 – Forcing purchase of 20, when a full set is 16. It is good to have spares, but forcing an extra $7.32, on those wishing a set…bitchy.

Result of policies #1 and #2, is not bitchy, it is just the way it is, price for a full set of collets, shipped is $47.66.

A policy that is not bitchy, but unfortunate, I am unable to locate detailed specifications on the Nissan collets, to definitely determine if collet interchange is possible. (Aftermarket resellers provide detailed specifics, regarding this part (see the opening post for a detailed view of Melling collets.))

NissanPartsDeal and http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki/index.php?title=Valves

Resellers, like Rockauto are usually good when it comes to identifying interchangeable parts, but I place more trust in OEM resellers and enthusiast sites like datsun1200 and Ratsun.

However, there are discrepancies, creating current concern. As mentioned in my thread opening post, collet specifications and interchangeability options, lack uniformity and are therefore, suspect.

Final Note: I run down these rabbit hole chasing “better” because sometimes, someone, in the last few decades, found a better way.

Where are the old ones?????

I still have most of them, According to some popular build guides (so certainly not biased) when replacing valves and springs and the like, collets should be replaced. I am not sure of the significance of hardened metals or collet angle.

As always, original equipment quality is always superior to after market parts. This isn't a valve cover gasket. It one fails the engine will eat a valve.

Thank you DatzenMike, original equipment is usually my default, I keep searching for tiny betterments, in vain hope they will add up. Comp cam answered my email and claims none of their products apply to a Nissan Z24. OEM it is-- done and dusted
