rcwidower
I’m putting together an L20b with a u67 head, does anybody know if any of the head bolts go through a water jacket? I want to make sure they’re sealed if they do. Thanks Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I know. No. None of the head bolts penetrate the cooling system. This woiuld be an obvious bad idea by any engine maker. I know of no Datsun engine with this. Make sure the holes and threads are clean and make sure the head bolts are clean and undamaged. Used are totally re-usable. Wipe the threads with an oily rag. NEVER set the head down on the combustion chamber side. Hopefully the engine was set to TDC before the head came off. Assure that the cam has not been turned while the head was off or turn it so both #1 valves are closed before mounting and bolting down or bent valves might happen. Head gasket should go on dry with no sealers or gasket shellac. Previously the head should be checked for flatness with a straight edge. If you can slip a 0.004" feeler gauge under the straight edge you really should have it milled. Be sure the two engine dowels are in the block in the front and rear manifold side head bolt holes. R A D 7.....8 3.....4 1......2 5.....6 9....10 Torque in this sequence to 20 ft lbs. then again to 40 ft lbs. once more to 60 ft lbs. Done. Don't forget the two small bolts down into the timing cover on either side at the front. Quote Link to comment
rcwidower
It’s fairly common on older V8s from various manufacturers to have head bolts passing through water jackets. In those cases you would use a thread sealant on those particular bolts. I had assumed not but wanted to be sure. I’ve gone through the entire engine, and have the long block just about finished. Thanks for the answer Quote Link to comment
