Bleach
Do the 14" stock steel wheels from a 1973 truck clear the brakes on the 1978-79? I figured they do but I was curious if anyone has any personal experience with fitment. Quote Link to comment
Bugeye
Im not sure if they will clear or not, but I know that the 73 wheels aren't vented Quote Link to comment
Bleach
right. The wheels I am talking about are not vented. I dont' think cooling effect is a concern though. Quote Link to comment
Bugeye
hope this helps ya bleach here is a wheel from my 79, notice the offset and the vents here is the wheel from my 73, again notice the offset this measurement is taken from the back of the mounting surface to the outside edge of the wheel on the 73 wheel, its 4 1/2 inches the 79 wheel, notice its 5 1/4 inches from the mounting surface to the edge of the wheel So without jacking up the 79 and taking the front wheel off and the looks of these two measurements, the wheels would fit the rear end with no problem, but would hit the calipers in the front. I hope this helps you. Quote Link to comment
dat620
the 73 has drums all around, i concur, the wheels would rub on newer trucks, the measurements alone show it, and i don't think u want to run 1" spacers  Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I could be wrong but I seem to remember Doug saying there were 3 different rims for the 620. The '78-'79 would fit the earlier but not the other way round. The offset would indicate the earlier trucks had a narrower width rim to rim. Quote Link to comment
Bleach
The caliper sets inside the wheel though. The clearance issue should not be with how far inward the wheel lip sets but with the curve of the wheel from the lug mounting point to the welds on the rim. The shape looks the same to me. The offsets show that the 1979 wheel sets inward on the suspension more which makes sense because the later trucks had a wider stance. too bad I dont' have a 1978 truck to try these wheels on :) Quote Link to comment
Icehouse
I will rent you my truck so you can test fit them :D Why are you wondering? Quote Link to comment
Cuts metal like mad
jus my opinion, but if hey work on kingpin trucks with a disc brake conversion, I don't see why it won't work on a 78-79 balljoint truck Quote Link to comment
Bleach
I will rent you my truck so you can test fit them :D Why are you wondering? I have these wheels for sale, and someone with a disc brake trucks wants to know if they'll fit. Can I rent your truck for a dollar? I'll need it for about 20 minutes. Quote Link to comment
Bandit240
Ive got a 78 620 with disk brakes on the front and ive been running it with rims off a 1976 620 for 3 years now. No rubbing issues on them. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Are the fronts wider set than the backs? Quote Link to comment
Bandit240
I dont know. I really never looked to see. Quote Link to comment
peanut2425
Early 620 wheels fit on a late 720 if that helps Quote Link to comment
tdaaj
i don't think you have anything to worry about. they all fit. i had a 79 truck that i run to hell and back several times. used any wheel that held air, 521, 520 620 didn't matter. Quote Link to comment
rat tail dragger
the rearend in the 79 is wider then the 73 about inch or so wider but i ran my stock 73 wheels on my 86 720 and they didnt rub now if you put fronteriers on a 73 wont fit unless you use a 1 spacer in front and change the rearend to a 79 if that helps Quote Link to comment
