When walking around the wrecking yards I always assumed that the brake drums that were dished were not self adjusting, but the drums that were not dished were self adjusting.

As for why they made them without the dish, it gave the vehicle a wider stance along with the axle being wider also, seems like I only have seen self adjusting brakes on 1985/86 except for one 1984 truck, but I am not in the habit of removing brake drums to look at the brake shoes in the wrecking yards so I don't recall seeing dished drums with self adjusting brakes, I only turn the drums to see which way the opposite drum turns.

How can you tell dished from non dished?

See this drum has a dish where the lug nut studs are, it's sunken in the center about a quarter inch.

See how this later 1986 720 drum is raised in the center about a quarter inch, this is a self adjusting rear brake type drum I have.

As I said, just because the drums are different doesn't mean I know that they are self adjusting type rear brakes of not, I don't know for sure, but this 1986 rear drum covers the self adjusting type brakes in this rearend I have.
