water pump question

i want to put an electric cooling fan on my 79 620 & ive got a water pump from a 76 280z that does not have the built in fan clutch,will it bolt up to my L20b thank ya:D

It'll bolt up, but you will need to move the pulley out to match the crank and alternator pulleys.

use the stock pump so you dont have to worry about the pulleys

The later 620s have 3 cores rads I belive,just install a 160deg 54mm size stat.

if still dont work then add the electric fan

I would not run it without a fan. Bad idea.

 

I just converted my '79 620 from the stock clutch type water pump to the older style pump with no clutch. I pulled the pulley and fan from the salvage yard off an earlier L powered car/truck. Very easy conversion. No real down side. The up side is the truck is a LOT quieter thanks to the fan. Hope this helps.

The Z pump has a higher volume output than the 620 pump.

I know the Z pump moves more water, but the pulley thing is a PITA. I just bought a Japanese water pump for a 510.. Man the truck is a LOT quieter!

Spectre has spacer kit's, as well as some other manufacturers. I picked some up at Shmucks.

Not sure how many blades are on the non-clutch fan... four? I'm pretty sure they move more air. The Z ones move more water and air. Both are designed to slip at high speed where there is plenty of air flow and they aren't needed. I have a Z water pump for the flow and just cut the clutch part off and have an electric fan.

I have seen one on a Z22 but assumed it was swapped on when the original pump or clutch failed. Most if not all Nissans after mid '70s have the clutch fan. I imagine they (clutch type) are standard equipment and doubt if you could even ask for a regular one.

 

If there was a 720 truck without it I would guess it would be the Dual tire Cab/Chassis option. It's for fleet use with a cube van box or motor home on the back and would NOT want the fan slipping at high speed/throttle. Maybe?
