Icehouse
Can they be reused? I got one from Frank, he was going to toss it, but I heard they are reusable so I had to save it :D Maybe they just drop the compression with another gasket.... Quote Link to comment
84TAVeRT
i reused one on my 1300... just gotta torque it... warm it up ... and retorque while hot... Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
YOu sure it not a Felpro head saver shim???????? I seen some that look like head gaskets.(But very thin) Not a tru head gasket. The 2 stroke RDs some have copper gaskets and Yes heat up then install. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Jeff, I discussed this with fineline (I think) NWDE about a year ago and he said it was reusable. Use some kind of spray on liquid copper gasket and coat both sides. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Rebuilt an L18 for my 521 back in the '70s. Could not afford rod bearings so pulled the ones out of my junked '68 510. At least the '68 ones hadn't quite gone all the way through the babbitt into the copper backing material like the truck ones had. Only had to work for six months till I got an L20B. Talk about used!!! Quote Link to comment
Icehouse
Wow guys thanks for the quick reply time :D It does say felpro on it Hainz. Are the true copper head gaskets thicker? Haha your right Rex I'm a true ratsun dude, reusing parts :) I wanted to get the copper gasket so if I acidently install the cam 180 off ;) now to get an L powered rig to try it on :) Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Jeff that is a shim saver that Felpro made when the head was shaved instead of using cam tower shims. I took apart a engine then all of a seddent I had 2 gaskets in front of me. best is to have Frank find the orginal box for that then go to the Columbia River and throw it IN!!!!!!! real copper gaskets go for like 100$or more I believe Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
And are 0.32" thick. Or any thickness you want. Could not find the post on (nwde, shhh!) but remember them. If you were removing the head often they would pay for themselves after a few times. 'O' rings and turbos, oh my!. Quote Link to comment
71-521
If I remember right it was a thread by fineline... I saved a link about it called "hussy copper": http://www.importperformanceparts.net yup, it was.. .031 thick. But you can choose how thick you want it up to .125 I think 90-150 bucks http://www.nwde.org/extras/forum/printer_friendly_posts.asp?TID=3622 Quote Link to comment
Fineline
You got it. Yes they can be re-used. A lot of guys say they leak but you nailed it in the second or third post. The guys that say they leak dont take the time to re-torque them which is a must. These gaskets were the ones of choice for the turbo and supercharger guys before the MLS gaskets. I used a spray on copper gasket maker and gave it 4 or 5 coats before installing it to help seal the h2o passages as reccomended by my engine machinist. Quote Link to comment
