71Hustler
I'd like to understand what I've got in the wagon I recently purchased. The seller described it as a Z22 with an A87 head. The head is definitely an A87, so mainly hoping to confirm that, yes, this appears to be an Z22 block. Part of why I'm unclear is that the original owner's notebook, first entry, reads: "new motor, L20b .40 bore rebuilt / high performance A87 head". Six years later, it says "new rebuilt motor" with no further identification mentioned. "NISSAN" is stamped on the side, along with some numbers, but I couldn't make out "Z22" -- maybe it's hidden by something. My next question is what specs do I go with for a valve adjustment? Would L20 specs make sense? (cold, intake .20/exhaust .25) I'm having some trouble with Photobucket, so these are the only photos at the moment. Quote Link to comment
fisch
I have an lz22, if no one replies, I can see if I can find where the I'd is on mine tomorrow. But I imagine someone smarter than me will be along swiftly with the answer. Quote Link to comment
fisch
It should be stamped on the other side between the 2&3 exhaust parts I think. http://community.ratsun.net/topic/54314-what-do-i-got-z22-or-z24-need-help/ 1 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Stamped on drivers side, in between 2 and 3, like Fisch said. 1 Quote Link to comment
Jester
If you look on the pad (behind the dip stick) that is closest to the back of the block and see were it says L20B, you will find your answer. If it was a Z22 block, it would be on the drivers side of the block. An LZ engine is merely a Z series block with an L series head on top. Quote Link to comment
dr.feltersnatch
nissan made a naps z series of motors. naps standing for nissan anti pollution system. the engine block is pretty much an l series block but with a crappy flowing head. so people bolt on a better flowing head, like the a 87 and now you essentially have an l22. here are some links to help you. http://community.ratsun.net/topic/54656-basic-lz22-build-w-flat-top-sss-su/ http://community.ratsun.net/topic/21285-lz22-engine/ now for valve adjustment i would use standard l series specs. cold engine is .008 and .010 1 Quote Link to comment
71Hustler
Thanks everyone! I just contorted myself on the driver's side of the engine to see around the intake/exhaust and still didn't find anything. But, I know it's not a L20, so I have my answer. Re: valve adjustment, excellent! I've done this once before already on my truck, so feeling good about that. Quote Link to comment

fisch
I didn't build it, but the guy who did ran Mobile 1 synthetic in it from the get-go, so I've kept it up. Using 10W30. If you check out the link in my signature, you can read what all was done to the engine. Way above my knowledge base! LOL. 1 Quote Link to comment
