720jon
OK. Here's one for you. 84 4x4 720 trans grenaded yesterday. I bought a trans out of a 93 2wd hardbody. The trans in mine is the short one, the one I got is long. I know I need to shorten the shaft between the trans and t case but I have to get to work (33 miles) to do it. I know it's a lot of extra work (but I need it driving by Monday) but can I take the t case out and install a 2wd driveline to make it work? P.s. engine is running AWESOME! After I rebuilt it i knew the trans was going to be the next to go lol 2 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
If the transfer case is separate I see no reason you can't. Quote Link to comment
wayno
Your going to have to fab up some kind of carrier bearing mount cross member, maybe it already has one? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Wayno the primary driveshaft between the transmission and the transfer case is only at most a couple of feet. You you need do is carefully measure the two transmission lengths and subtract. The difference is how much to shorten it. 2 Quote Link to comment
wayno
He is talking about removing the transfer case and basically making it a 2wd with a 2 piece driveline, that was what I was referring to. 720jon
Only temporarily. But that is exactly what I was taking about. I didn't finish last night so I'm trying to get everything back together with a soon to be shortened shaft. 1 Quote Link to comment
720jon
Wayno the primary driveshaft between the transmission and the transfer case is only at most a couple of feet. Less than 2 feet from end to end. More like 10-15" joint to joint 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If running a 31.5" 5 speed they are barely a foot. 1 Quote Link to comment
MicroMachinery
Wouldn't it be easier to find a direct replacement trans? 1 Quote Link to comment

MicroMachinery
(but I need it driving by Monday) Oh.. right.. so shortening/balancing a driveline, aligning the trans and transfer case and making it work would be cheaper and quicker than using the right trans. Gotcha. :D 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It's the 27th already. 1 Quote Link to comment
720jon
I couldn't find the same trans. Getting a custom shaft made this morning $60 1 Quote Link to comment
