donedirty2010
Hello i have a 1987 nissan hardbody with a napz motor and im having an issue with my transmission..when it is running,it leaks gear oil from the bottom..im not exactly sure where it is coming from but it appears to be leaking from inside of the tranny where the metal plate and the tranny meet..when the truck is off it does not leak..does anyone know what could be the problem..?! Any help and input would be greatly appreciated to help me resolve this problem..thank you.. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If you mean it leaks between the engine and the transmission then this sounds like a rear crank seal is bad. Possibly the oil pan gasket at the back. Quote Link to comment
donedirty2010
I was thinkin that as well but i just had the motor rebuilt from top to bottom by a machine shop so all the gaskets and seals are new..and its gear oil that seems to be leaking not motor oil..could it be anything in the tranny that would be defective and cause it to leak between the shimming plate and the motor.. datsunaholic
Front trans input seal could be bad. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
That. Check the transmission oil level. Is it down? Check the engine oil is it down? Must be one or the other. Rebuilt or new is no guarantee there will be no leaks. Oil is oil and hard to tell engine from trans. Quote Link to comment
donedirty2010
How many quarts of oil go in to the tranny? because there was none when i put the tranny in due to me cleaning the tranny out when the motor was pulled to be rebuilt..so when i put it in i started by putting 3 and a half quarts to start and i fulled it through the top shifter whole.. Z-train
If it doesn't leak just sitting there, and it starts leaking when you start the engine,It is the rear main seal.Nothing else is going to put lube on the ground just sitting there running. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The fill hole is half way up the transmission side. It holds 2 liters or 4 1/4 US pints. (just over 2 US quarts) You put 7? pints in??? No wonder it's spewing oil. Pull the fill plug and let the oil pour out until it stops. When oil is level with the fill hole bottom it's correctly filled. Quote Link to comment
wayno
Has the tranny been making noise lately? Quote Link to comment
donedirty2010
No ..not at all..! And is the fill whole on the passenger or drivers side of the tranny?! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Usually on the driver's side but have seen Z cars with it on the right. If you look there is an equal casting boss and either side can be used by the maker. It could be indented and take a 1/2" ratchet or Johnson bar end or it could be a large square 'nut'. Oil level is usually checked by removing and checking that the level is up to the bottom of the hole. You can easily fill by running a couple of feet of garden hose down from under the hood. Place a dollar store kitchen funnel in the end and pour until oil leaks out. You are now full. There's no advantage to over filling. Quote Link to comment
Nuclear Water Boy
Over filling the trans will push trans fluid out of the breather tube on top of the trans. Trans oil and engine oil are very very different from each other in feel and smell. Make sure that you have a trans vent line running atleast up to one of the upper transmission to engine bolts. It helps with keeping water out of the trans if you don't have it plus it also helps if you slightly overfill. You can still fill the trans from the shifter hole, this is how I do it because it's easier. Just remove the upper fill plug from the trans but first make sure the vehicle is on level ground. Then pour until oil starts weeping out of the fill hole and you are done!!! Lou "I once filled on Pints, and it was good, I think" Quote Link to comment
