metalmonkey47
Hey guys, so after slapping my new head on my L24, I noticed the chain was SUPEr tight (no slack) after re-installing the top sprocket. Started her up and it's whining bad. It was installed the same way it came apart, so I don't know what I'm missing. And yes, I did block the tensioner before I started, and it's still in place. banzai510(hainz)
pop valve cover and look down with a light to see if the tensioner pop out and is cocked 45deg out. maybe its catchin the lower edge of the slack side guide? or you installed a longer bolt on the Thermo stat housing as there are 2 lengths(have swapped) and its hitting the chain but highly unlikely that was taken off. metalmonkey47
No luck. You can't actually see any evidence that the tensioner is out at all. The bolt isn't the issue. There's no slack in the chain, but the tensioner was blocked when it came apartml. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Does the new head have tower shims? Quote Link to comment
scooter
If you can take the front cover off you should be able to back off the slack side guide if it's really effin tight, I'd take the front cover off and take a look Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
sccooter , We dont want to take the front cover off thats why hes asking. Trying to prevent that but to me its the next task. As my chain was tight also but I could see my tensioner was out and cocked at a 45 deg angle. The only other option is that the shue is just worn out to the metal and maybe soemhow with a magnet ck the oil for shavings from the tensioner Most will be owrn right at the bottom as the chain goes around it. metalmonkey47
Got it. Turns out the tensioner had popped ever so slightly out of place, and hung up on the slack side guide. I'm working on the motor right now. The motor is getting some seriously needed maintenance. Guess that's the good way of looking at it.. I thought I'd be able to get it without pulling the front cover, but it was so cockeyed out of place there was no chance. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
the blu timming chain swedge works actually pretty good. You can feel it past the tensioner when pushing it down so you know its pushed up tight. as its kindof soft rubber and gives a little and wont break.. most people dont stick them down far enough. i though i had it down then pushed more and fell it slip down Quote Link to comment
Sealik
The wedge doesn't necessarily have to reach the tensioner. If the chain is properly locked into position the tensioner shouldn't move My homemade wedge is 5" long and never had any issues on L or Z engines. Quote Link to comment
