jacob80
Hello, I'm weighing my options and I just can't seem to decide what I want to swap into my new 510. It current has a GM 350 in it that some genius thought would be a brilliant idea, so I'm in the midst of selling that thing and picking up a new motor. I've been set on a KA24 for a while, but the VG30 sound really cool too and it's a stout motor. I'd definitely do a single or twin turbo configuration. This will be a car I'd like to take to the drag strip once in a great while, roll race with, and just have a lot of fun with without worry about breaking it if I beat the piss out of it. What are Ratsun's thoughts on the matter? Quote Link to comment
DISLEXICDIME
Doing a dual cam vg turbo is not for the faint of heart. Quote Link to comment
jacob80
Doing a dual cam vg turbo is not for the faint of heart. It'd be run on a Megasquirt box, assuming you're referring to electronics? Or perhaps something else? Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
A VG30DETT, like from the later 300ZX, is shoehorned in there. If you want/need to do any work-you'll be pulling it out. Stock ECU on one would be fine. I'd go for the KA. Better chance of it actually getting completed. Quote Link to comment

flatcat19
Generally to a Datsun. I've seen 3 510s with the DETT. All 3 owners said never again. Quote Link to comment
paradime
Deja Vu again ay Flats. Here's some perspective. After market support for turbocharging the KA and swap into a 510, Lots. VG30DETT support, ZERO. Info on swapping the KA, Tons. VG30DETT, seriously rare. Skill level to swap a KA, upper mid. Shoehorning a V6 twin turbo 3.0L beast into a 510... Gandalf would struggle. KA turbo without the necessary upgrades to the chassis, suspension, drive train, breaks, $3,000 Min. VGDETT totally open ended. You'd need to have your shit stacked pretty neatly to do the KA, but you'd have to be totally OCD to pull off the big Z. The reality is, anything more than 270hp in a 2,100 lb. street-able 510 is a waste of power That being said, some times too much is just what you need. Have fun plotting, but get your ducks in a row before you start, otherwise you may send another dime to rot in a barn. 1 Quote Link to comment
q-tip
Doing the standard vg30e wouldn't be much more difficult than the ka, even maybe the vg30et. The advantage of the ka is the amount of documentation on the swap and the aftermarket support. The VG on the other hand is about as robust a stock engine you can get and the torque....sweet sweet torque..... Quote Link to comment
Mildsquare
what's the condition/setup of the 350? why not boost that? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
No room left for turbo plumbing on 350. Quote Link to comment
Mildsquare
you can say that again, just looked up some pics lol. now that is def a tight squeeze. Quote Link to comment
red76datsun
350 in a 510 just shouldn't ever be. ka or sr. Quote Link to comment

paradime
This entire conversation is moot when you considerJake can find 30 other threads just like this cheep clone. And, inevitably they all spin off into a bunch of subjective bickering, please reference above^. One common thread running through this over recycled topic of "what motor should I swap?" is it's always asked by someone who has no idea what they're really asking. In all reality, if Jake and others had done some research on this thoroughly covered topic, they might understand the answers we offer. Better yet, they wouldn't need to ask the question in the first place. We can give tnoobs advice of gold, but if they have no basis of understanding, it falls on deaf ears. So why are we stepping into this pointless vortex of mental masturbation time and time again? When I ask myself that question my first answer is I want to help, but if I'm really being honest here, I must admit part of me want's to show off what I know. And if someone challenges my golden nuggets of wisdom I'm compelled to defend my honor with all due vigor. Does this left hanged merry go round help the OP? Aside from a little (i) attention (be that pos or neg), I don't think so. There's that saying, "Give the man a fish...", but if we teach the noob to fish for his own answers, we feed him for a life time. I'm turning a new leaf. From this thread forward it's tough love bitches, "Share what you think first, and then I'll point you in the right direction". My $0,02 1 Quote Link to comment
