datzenmike
Only the L16 pan from a 521 will work for sure. The pan from an early 620 may work. You mean the steering cross rod? Check that the idler arm bushing isn't worn and allowing too much up and down movement. If there is a well marked rub spot drop the linkage down or turn fully to one side and using a ball peen hammer dent the pan in to clear. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
The Cross Rod is also called "center link" or "drag link". Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I read too many Nissan FSMs. Quote Link to comment
MicroMachinery
A "trunk" is also called a "boot". "Hood" means "bonnet". 1 Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
None of those terms are used by Datsun, except cross rod. In Japan they use "hood", "shock", etc. Quote Link to comment
vodkanmilk
@king rat you dont have a lousy l16 oil pan laying around would you?? looking for one is the fun part thanks alot man im new to the datsun world and loving it!!! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Not an L16 pan. And as I stated it's not just an L16 oil pan... it will have to be from another 521. If you can drive it you only need a 1/4" dimple in it. Quote Link to comment
wayno
Welcome :) Hello Ratsun freaks! i have a 1972 521 datsun pick up for some odd reason my center link hits on my oil pan. iv been reading on the forums that i might have l20b oil pan is the reason it hits. also was readin that a l16 oil pan might do the trick. but any advise would be great!!! I have a question, did you do the engine conversion to an L20B? Were you even able to get the centerlink connected, is the centerlink bent? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I put an L20B into my old 521 using the L16 pan. The only other L20B truck pan would be for the later 620. It fit just fine even though the motor is 3/4" taller. Just dent the pan. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
So is it the cross rod or the torsion bar brace that's rubbing??? Quote Link to comment
konig209
His is the cross rod. Only 521 oil pan works with 521. If he has 620 pan he can do what kelowog did and bang in where it rubs and done. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
The cross rod looks bent And im over here like Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
So he should of got the oil pan last night, and now he will be correct. This thread is no longer needed. Quote Link to comment
richw41
This may be old news but I had a similar problem when I got my 521. I found that the motor mounts were the problem. The engine had dropped and was causing all kinds of vibration. I found the motor mounts at Pep Boys. I checked everywhere for them. Still looking for a new transmission mount. Huge difference in the engine noise and clearance of the rod. Quote Link to comment
