fisch
So I just read in the "How to keep your Datsun L-series Nissan Alive" book that if you have a clogged PVC valve, it can create enough added pressure that you will get oil leaks. How would such a clog effect your performance. How would the truck run? I read how to test it but haven't yet (its late). I should ad that the PCV hose on my l16 is a nasty looking hose which I am sure after reading, should be replaced! As I've mentioned in other threads, I am leaking oil, and this is a long shot for what I suspect is really a leaky rear main oil seal, but I thought I would ask. So far everything that has gone wrong on my Datsun has been a pretty easy fix, so who knows! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If the hose or the valve itself were plugged, the blow by gasses would just come out the valve cover outlet that normally draws filtered air in from the air filter housing. The air filter would probably get all oily. Quote Link to comment
fisch
So mike have you ever heard the notion that it would cause oil leaks from the seals? The book I mentioned above says "If there is too much crankcase pressure, then both seals will probably leak. Ususally this is caused by a bad PCV valve." BTW I got this book from the library, and from an illustrators perspective, it is really FANTASTIC. All drawings inside, not photos, and the quality of the drawings is simply remarkable. You could tear out pages and frame it. (But don't do it to a library book!) Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
A clogged PCV can cause exessive pressure in the crankcase. It will cause your seals to leak. It's pretty easy to check the PCV (air should blow through freely one way and not at all the other way) and they are cheap to replace. That said, Mike is also right that pressure will be relieved by the vent at the valve cover. It just won't be removed by manifold vacum (sp?) which probably removes more than just atmospheric venting. Quote Link to comment
racerx
Here is a write up: http://www.filtercouncil.org/techdata/tsbs/94-2R1.html. basically it prevents excess exhaust (oil and grime) to escape and protects engine from sludge build up. Quote Link to comment
fisch
Thanks guys, and thanks for the link RacerX! Does anyone know the part# for the PCV valve AND hose on an L-16? I have looked in my parts # book, and see it pictured, but there is no parts # listed. Quote Link to comment
moparvwfreak
i have seen the hose on evilbay for sale. the PCV valve you can get at any local parts house as far as i know. should only be a couple bucks. Quote Link to comment
fisch
I think the PCV valve is # is 11810-e3001 for one w/ nissan packaging. Looks like it was used on just about everything up to 87 or so? But great to know I can pick it up anywhere. I shoulda asked at napa today but the $100 I had just plunked down for brake cylinders and speedbleeders made me not want to buy anything else! I see the hose on ebay, and it is an option for sure, but I am often surprised how much cheaper things can be direct from Nissan (if they still stock it!) So if anyone does find that hose# let me know! Quote Link to comment
