I am super bad with wiring don't know much about it but found out all of the wires to the voltage regulator were cut. I had a wire from the battery to the ballast resistor to the coil to the dizzy and it wasn't getting the right voltage. so I need some pictures of what colored wires go where look at some wiring diagrams but cant understand those. shows the voltaghe regulator hbas 6 wires? mine only has 3.. so any help on this will be very greatful thank you! flatcat19
For what vehicle and year? Maybe a '70 521. Did someone put an IR alternator in this thing and rewire the regulator for that? Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
wasn't running when I got it. and whats an IR alternator? Quote Link to comment
DanielC
IR = Internally Regulated. Look at the connections for the small wires on the alternator. if you see a "S' and a "L", it is an internally regulated alternator. Externally regulated alternators have a "F" and a "N". Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Newer alternators use 3 wires. Can you post a pix of the alternator? Stock early 521 alternator has four wires + big A wire. Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
it has F N on it Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
That should have four wires: A - output Y - Field (F) WB - Neutral (N) B - Earth (ground) The regulator needs six wires. Maybe splice them back together? Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
Looks like the stock 1970 alternator. The loose wire, the black one, should be bolted to the E screw on the alternator. Do you have photos of the regulator? Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
the thing hanging there is the voltage regulator correct? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Horn won't work until this is bolted onto the body. Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
that's for the horn? Quote Link to comment
wayno
The thing hanging is the horn relay. Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
well shit what does the voltage relay look like and where is it? Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
regulator Quote Link to comment
wayno
It is a larger box in back of where the horn relay is mounted. Basically it is just in back of the rear battery mount support. What area do you live in Vancouver? I live in Cascade park. Quote Link to comment

wayno
OK, we have talked before, I don't have my voltage regulator connected, but it is still in the truck. In the top left corner of the photo below, see the green wires that are looped into the plug, that is the voltage regulator plug bypass for an internally regulated alternator, the external regulator is the box behind the plug.
