ReyChappell
A few days ago, the clutch on my 310 started to slip, so I decided to take it apart to see what was wrong. It has the FWD A14 with the clutch that can be serviced without dropping the tranny. Unfortunately, when I removed the bearing housing from the clutch, the primary drive gear stayed in the clutch disc. Now its stuck in there and I'm not sure how to get out. Does anybody have any advice or tips on how to remove it? Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
Wow I actually have no idea what you're talking about. I've never in all my years here seen a FWD 310 discussed in such detail. I hope someone can provide you with the right answer. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Just tap it out. Put the clutch over a can or suspended over two pieces of metal, then hit the shaft with a rubber mallet. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
^ That is the craziest looking thing. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
I helped change a clutch in one so long ago I barely remember. I had a B-210 and 521at the time so was the 'expert'. Quote Link to comment
ReyChappell
Could you be a little more descriptive, ggzilla? I'm not sure what you mean by suspending the clutch; do you mean wedge it in between the pressure plate and flywheel? I don't quite understand :-( Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
> when I removed the bearing housing from the clutch, the primary drive gear stayed in the clutch disc. So you have the bearing housing removed. Now the gear is stuck in the disc. If you are replacing the disc, just tap the gear out of the disc. Don't worry about the disc, the gear is the part you want to save. Although it may be broken as it usually comes out with the jackshaft assembly. Quote Link to comment
ReyChappell
Well, the weird thing is that there's a new clutch kit in it. I don't believe I aligned the clutch right, though, and I didn't replace the pilot bearing. I've seen how to do an old trick to get it out, but I don't know how difficult it would be to do on my car, since I can't take the tranny out right now. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
The pilot bushing rarely needs replacing. So the gear got stuck when you were putting the new clutch in? Quote Link to comment
ReyChappell
Not exactly. When I replaced the clutch the first time, the same thing happened: the gear was stuck in the clutch disc. Me and a couple of my friends had to pry at it to get it out in order to replace the clutch. Then two weeks later, the clutch starts to slip, and I can't get the gear out again. Quote Link to comment
ReyChappell
Hey guys. It's been a couple years, but I figured out why the clutch kept slipping on my datsun. As it turns out, there is a small seal inside the throw out bearing housing, on the back of the input shaft. It's supposed to seal the push rod that runs inside the shaft, between the bearing and the pressure plate. I was only able to find it through the dealership; called a "speedometer pinion seal". Odd name if you ask me. I did this at the beginning of the year, and it's been holding up very well. I actually enjoy driving my car again. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
So it was an oil leak then. Because no seal or O ring is going to interfere with clutch operation. There is an oil seal and an O ring on the transmission's front cover. They seal oil in the transmission. 1 Quote Link to comment
