1972 521

Recommended Posts

I'm new to this. I have my eye on a 1972 521 . It needs a windshield, all window rubber, and a tail gate. also needs a trans. & rear end. The one in it has 4 lug axles. Do you think i'll have trouble finding any of these parts? The body is in good shape otherwise. It has origional paint & minimum surface rust. I can pick it up for $900. Is that a good deal, or a little steep. I would greatly appreciate some feedback.

Don't mean to seem rude or anything, but without knowing what part of the country you are in....we can't help much. I'm always puzzled why everyone is so reluctant to put down what city or even state they are from in their profile. I typically don't even respond to questions like this....for just that reason. Not sure it's a very good deal in any part of the country. You can find all the parts, but if you're not on the west coast....it wouldn't be worth it due to shipping.

I always make sure that the body has not major rust..for like $900 dollars may seem like a good deal. But I've seen decent ones for like $3K in Calif. but then again that's in Calif. Parts should not be that difficult but why work extra hard when you can find a daily driver for 2 thousand more. You save time, headaches and money.

So do some analysis, maybe you can pick up an engine for $500 and paint another $5K for a good one, rims and tires, maybe $1K or used maybe $500, what about exhaust, window trimmings as you say..and labor and parts that come with restoring a car. The other question is how good are your mechanical, welding and body fabrication skills and are you at a state or city where parts are hard to come by, in other words, are there any junkyards in your area. So from what I have just listed about including the car and by the time you mod this car you will have spent like $8K, this does not include upgrading tranny to 5 speed and eventually you would want to since, you will be going 60 mph and your tack is like 4K already.

Hopefully, I am not scaring you but sometimes its good to sense a little bit of "shock and awe" since we are emotional beings and our hearts go one way and yet our wallets may go the other way.

Well....at least you're on the west coast....that helps a lot!!!! East of the Rockies, you can't find parts and typically...not many people are willing to ship stuff. So....lucky you :) $900 is def on the high side. I've bought several in better shape for $200-$300.....but that was several years ago and the values are going up.
