shakotan710
Replaced the old pump with a new one, tried to line it up and it just won't seem to work, won't even crank over. Any help? Tried to line it up at the 5* position at TDC and it won't start, the markings on the pump and the gear are in place, any pictures or tips would be very helpful Quote Link to comment
shakotan710
And when we install the gear, should the mark be one forward or backward of the oil pump marking? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
watch this and fwd till uyou see the oil pump install how about turn the dist adv or retard till it fires off then you can figure how far your off. if you really have to crank it your mostl likely off a tooth on the worm gear dial motor up to TDC on the crank Zero and then install the pump. watch the vid. or to dizzy install Quote Link to comment
kelowg
Both Marks should line up when installed. In other words, put motor to tdc and line up pump shaft tang to 11:28 position. Next time hold shaft with visegrips before removing pump. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
eplaced the old pump with a new one, tried to line it up and it just won't seem to work, won't even crank over. Any help? If it just won't start, saying it won't crank over is probably not right. Cranking it with the starter is cranking it over. Set the motor to TDC by lining up the notch on the crank pulley against the zero on the saw tooth timing scale. Check that both number one cylinder valves are both closed. Remove the two 10mm bolts holding the distributor on and lift it out. Look down into the hole and the oil pump drive spindle top should look like this... NOTE that the top of the spindle has two half moon shapes. The smaller should face to the front of the motor. Replace distributor and check that the #1 plug wire is above the rotor tip. You may have to advance it slightly by twisting the distributor clockwise to start it. Quote Link to comment

shakotan710
One more quick question, should I put some oil inside the pump when I'm installing it, its about 50/50 on my research, some say you need to, others say you don't, this should all be fixed by tomorrow Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
By all means fill the pump. It will help it to suck oil from the sump. You can also pull the plugs and crank for 10 seconds. This will force oil everything before lighting a fire in it. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
others say you don't, fill the pump????????? those guys are Crackers filling it fill up the cavities and creates a vacuum to pull the oil from the sump. If air in the system then it wont suck. kinda like sucking thru a straw. if not emerged it wont pull. Quote Link to comment
