If your engine is like a 521, the air pump does not really connect to the carb.  It does use the air cleaner to get filtered air, you can put a small auxiliary air inlet filter on the air pump inlet, instead of drawing air from under the air cleaner.

The "gulp" or anti backfire valve will still need to be hooked up to the intake manifold, along with the small vacuum sense line.
