Ranman72
start off with a new bushing and see how loose it is then these are the old style monkey motion and are loose and sloppy but without a good bushing you wont even be able to shift gears pics of the shifter at the tranny might also be helpfull Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Above.. wear between the striking rod end and the fork on either side will add side to side slop. The E clip can be removed and a 'nut and bolt' replace the pin and tightened. But have a care as the striking rod must still be free to move between them. I had better luck sliding a thin washer in there and securing the E clip again. The parts #37 Control Arm and the #17 Control Arm Pin (below) and pictures (above) can also have excessive clearance removed by adding washers. Again the parts must be free to move. The #8 'cone rubbers?" or control lever rubbers must be in good shape and firmly clamped in place by the #4 and #5 nut and washer to the shift lever bottom. Once the wear is too much the nut bottoms out and further tightening is impossible. Perhaps extra washers can be added top and bottom to squash the rubber? My old '68 the shifter would rotate completely 180 on the 3rd gear change which was very annoying. The term MonkeyMotion shifter is well earned. 1 Quote Link to comment
darrel
You can use some sway bar bushings to replace the cone bushings. There is a thread on classiczcars explaining how to use them. Quote Link to comment

DatMo
I know mine moves a ton but I'm not sure to what extent? I have play like you for a daily but I don't know what is too much play? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If you go around a corner and the shifter bumps your knee... it's too much If driving and you glance down and can't tell what gear it's in.... it's too much. If up shifting to third and you have to 'hunt' for it.... it's too much. If in gear and you can move the shift knob in a basketball size circle.... it's too much. If constantly taking off in third gear.... it's too much. 1 Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
If you can take your keys out of your pocket,, start car, and adjust radio, all without letting go of shifter.. You might be a 4speed Datsun owner 1 Quote Link to comment
