It should be connected up to that and the coolant runners in the intake. Without it connected the intake isn't cooled/warmed and the temp gauge probably tends to read low when the engine is really quite hot. There will likely be another plug on the front or side of the thermostat housing and likely one on the intake at the front base of the carb. If so you should really hook them up.
