Alec 720
@KhausticMess Yeah its decently clean, I still wish it was cleaner though. I did more work on the hood, stripped the paint off. Still need to sand the rust though and this is it at 1 1/2 inches high Quote Link to comment
k-autic
Hey nice truck its coming long good. The cowl would look nice my opinion is the 3 1/2 - 5 1/2 somewere in between. Good to see that you got rid that fram crap, keep posting Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
Thanks k-autic! I'm thinking about the cowl not sure how high I will do it, probably either 2 inches or 4 inches so I'll try to get pics of both heights and see which is better. Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
I realized I haven't posted a picture of my engine bay... probably for a good reason since its not very clean yet  This doesn't look too good.... Don't really care need new rubber anyway And if any of you have any idea's on tires. I was thinking 225/60 R15 Kumho Ecsta ASX tires, the rims are 15x8 not totally sure of the backspacing. The front tires are 205/70 R15 and rub on the floor pan And I think I'll do a 4 inch cowl and if I don't like it I could probably just sell it. Quote Link to comment
elmerfudpucker
I think 2" would be cool, much more would be getting into the line of sight to the road, but I am a bit on the vertically challenged side. Keep it up, the only thing to remember the z22 is not forgiving when it comes to heat! You will pop a head-gasket quick, so make sure you get your radiator checked and it flows real good. And a new water pump, hoses, and thermostat wouldn't hurt. BTW Autozone does a new OEM rad for like $150 so don't fall for the BS like Tacoma Radiator guys saying you have to have a custom $400+ one. I recommend Shwabe for the rubber due to I like the no headache warranty. I would also gut the interior at least one and address any rust now in the cab and replace the padding under the carpet. It would help with old smell. Also if you take the time to pull the dash, check the seals for the vents, wires, and bottom of the windshield. While your in there, open your heater core box, some rodent had about 2 cups of dog cookies and a nest in mine! good luck and have fun Bro! 1 Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
I don't think 4 inches high would really be in my line of sight, I'm 6 foot tall. But I'll see what I have for the sides and then decide how high to make it. Quote Link to comment
k-autic
4" all the way! Do it ! Do it! O n I've got 205/55 super steels on my 15s on my 620 n i love them good height n just wide enough to give it the flush look Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
205's on 8 inch rims are a bit to stretched. Since this truck was a automatic it probably has a 3.7 axle instead of the 3.5? So smaller tires could affect the gas mileage without giving me any more power or acceleration. I was just wondering how small I can go, 225/50's might work? Quote Link to comment
Z chopper
4" cowl induction to me looks off, the 720 doesn't have the lines for a huge cowl induction, but it is your truck. Maybe 3" and stick a boost guage in the induction opening Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If you have to go that high then bend it part way back like this... This looks like a wedge of cheese.... Trust me it will look way better if curved slightly. . Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
Ok I didn't think about that thanks for the tip! That was just blocks of wood to test the heights so I wasn't trying to do any curves or anything But I'll try to do that curve B) Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
Here is the KA24E engine I'll start working more on the cowl tomorrow just hope my really sore neck is better by then. Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
Today I made a cardboard template for the hood and tested it. I hope I got the curve right... Anyway wanted to see what you guys think before I cut into metal. Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
I'm working on welding it now.. But since I only have a stick welder and the welds look so bad, I'm going to wait until I finish the hood before showing you all. Quote Link to comment
84 4x4
Nice looking rig loving the cowl induction got me thinking bout it for mine now keep up the work might see you in Missouri sometime i go to Branson about once or twice a year 1 Quote Link to comment

Actually it should have a 4.11 rear end in it. There is a very easy way to check what the factory ratio was that was put in it and only takes about 10 seconds. Pull hood release, lift hood and brace it (still have 5 seconds to go) go to the pass side and look on the inner fender below the hood hinge for the engine tag. This one's an '82 engine tag for a 4x4 but the 2wd will be similar. This one's very faded and the printing is gone but at the bottom it will likely say TRANS/AXLE and just to the right FS5W71B or F4W71B (if standard) 3N71B if auto and to the right of that HF41... 41 means 4.11 ratio. The one in the picture is HF43 which is 4.375. HF39 would be 3.90 and so on. Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
Thanks for the Info! and you are right its a 4.11  Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
Finished the cowl!! And the 1981 Datsun 720 Owners Manual! in good condition. Quote Link to comment
Kronomaster
Awesome project man, I recently got my hands on the same truck. An '81 720 king cab 4x4 with the Z22. It has a lot of problems still but runs better and better every time I get help on it. Good luck! 1 Quote Link to comment
Alec 720
Thanks!! Yeah it has quite a few problems still right now I need to get a head gasket... but spending money on other stuff  I need to save up about $500 to get it running then about another $400 on tires and $100 on miscellaneous stuff. Alec 720
So I was wondering... the rear end seems kinda draggy and I bet the brakes are bad.... but it only has 88,000 miles I have a 720 4x4 axle which has 200,000 miles an unknown how good the brakes are, another 720 axle (but I think its in even worse shape and also has higher mileage), and then I have a Nissan Hardbody axle with 200,000 miles but it has good brakes and all as far as I know. So do I rebuild the axle that is in it.. or use the Hardbody axle and just check the brakes? Quote Link to comment
