Get an idea of piston rings you need and/or using ... honing process could vary.... get the head checked for straightness as well as pressure checked while at it ( like $45 !? )

I've used Oregon Engine Rebuilders ... on two occasions ... i wont recommend them... but there are many other places that are worse.

Portland Engine Rebuilders is a toss up ... hard to know ... seen two engines rebuilt and blow up shortly after being rebuilt there... ( within 7000 miles from there)... twice ... under warranty ... ( one of them three times ).... but their boring/honing srrvice could be ok.

Dons machine shop ... i wouldn't ... just assume take a file or grinder to it ...

Theres one place ... depending on how much the guy has been drinking ... you can get excellent work ... or should have let your 5-year old nephew run the machines himself ... same result lol.

Remember ... if planning on using chrome moly rings ... they are hard to seat ... if at all ...

Also ... if a shop offers to heat-up and twist your head back ( from being warped) ... be really careful at the aluminum head specialists ... many claim to be ... i have no idea who is or isnt ... i had a friend go through a nightmare ... they can eff up your cam tower alignment as well if careless ... or non pro.... dont shave the head unless you have to as well ..

Get a quote on paper before you leave your items for major work ;)

Good luck!

Awesome! I will check with steve's precision machine. Looks like a pretty good shop.

As for head. I need a new one. closed chamber or 210 head will be too high of CR.

L18 block/rods/crank

ZX Flat tops 40 over.

Open head

Should achieve a 9.3:1 CR and will increase displacement from 1.77L to 1.85L

How fast would you need the job done?

The machine shop I use is very good at what they do, I never hear about what a lot of these guys on here talk about, like the rodend clearances, ect, they just do the job and give me back engines/heads done, and tell me how much I owe them, seems like the shop bought everything needed to put a shortblock together, including the Z24 oilpump, Z24 stock pistons, a gasket set(napZ gaskets), as the Z24 headgasket was needed, they bought everything.

I suppied the Z22 block, crank, and rods, and it was still together I beleave.

They also put the short block together, and I beleave the whole thing cost me under $1500.00, but I had to wait quite a while before I had it in my hands, as the race cars, take priority, they are the most important to him, i'm just this guy that keeps bringing "datsun" parts to him, he's been doing my machine work since 1995.

He's a really nice guy, I go down and talk to him every couple weeks, he has another W53 head of mine that's getting big valves put in, and the intakes ported, it's been down there a while now, I took it there the 10th of feb.

EDIT

All the head work was included in the above price, but it was just a rebuild(all new non yellow metal hardened seats) with a new RV cam.

Well I would like to have the block back early may. Should be getting my pistons this week/ early next.

Gotta have it all buttoned up for Canby!

But really, I will reassemble the motor, but I dont have the tools for machine work :)

My guy couldn't give you any exact time of delivery, as I said, his prioritys are the race cars, as they need there work done yesterday, to get it back together by next weekend, so I wait patiently for my parts to get done, and he gives me a good deal.

No problem really.

Got a call this morning from where I ordered my pistons. Said they dont stock them, and that they would be special order, so no returns. Then the guy was like you know these are 40 over right? Of course I do! So he said 5-6 business days for shipping. If they are coming directly from ITM, well the ITM sales guy told me they have 5 left in NC. So my guess is 6 business days.
