The datsun kid
Hey guys so I found a l20b out of a 77' 710 the guy selling it is older and he use to work at a Nissan dealership he says the motor was rebuilt and then it sat for a while he said he started it before he pulled it and it ran good he wants $700 and seems kinda firm on the price but it comes with a 4speed, weber 32/36, and all the tid bits like alt, fan, etc so is it a good deal or no? Any input would be good thanks guys Quote Link to comment
hobbes_the_cat
sounds kinda high for a motor you cant hear run and has been sitting. weber 32/36 are $100 used and 4-speeds are hard to give away. That's up here in Washington tho... 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
This all comes down to trust. If it was in a car you could start and drive it around and evaluate it. Right now it might as well be laying in the dirt of a wrecking yard. No way to know. Sorry but it's true. If you feel this guy is legit then maybe $400-$500 tops, I think $700 is a lot for the way it is. Owners tend to remember only the good and how they went to all the work to take it out and save it and seldom can realize that it's really only worth a couple of hundred at best. ggzilla
Ask the guy to help you give it a compression test. All you need is a battery and jumper cables (and the transmission bolted to the engine along with the starter). If he's willing to do that, and the dry & wet compression tests are good, then $700 is reasonable. Then start it, just need a gas can with hose to hook to the carburetor. It'll run 30 seconds with no water. If you don't hear any knocks it'd be good. On the other hand, you can buy complete running cars & trucks for $700. Quote Link to comment

The only thing I would add to this is to put an oil pressure gauge on it and crank it over while the plugs are out. The longer it's been sitting, the less it's worth IMO. Quote Link to comment
