Jeep Grand Cherokees are slow!

Hehehehehehehehehe! So I was headed back from work just now, in the hardbody. The KAZ24 Datsun hardbody to be exact. And there's a late 90's/early 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee all blacked out, with 18" rims and low pros driving beside me, with an extension ladder on the roof rack. I don't think too much of it, but we end up at the light to the on-ramp at Broadway, which is a long sweeping s curve onto the freeway, with plenty of room for fun.

He comes roaring up and slams on his brakes at the light, whereas I see it was turning red and gradually slow down. Now that we're stopped (and I've given him about 4 feet from the edge of my bumper) I see he's replaced the "Grand Cherokee" letters on the door/fender with "Flawless." In slightly crooked lettering even! :D

So at that point, I said, F that. Light goes green and I take off. He follows suit....1st....2nd...3rd....3rd comes in the middle of the second part of the s curve and I'm at about 60, so I back off just a litte, rear end gets a little loose (didn't break traction, just unloaded the suspension) and I apply medium throttle then full through the corner. We get up to 90 before he gives up.

Keep in mind he still has an extension ladder strapped (evidently well-strapped) to his roof. And we happen to get off at the same off ramp later down the road and I'm grinning. And he just kind of looks over and then doesn't look over again. I think the big "Datsun" across the tailgate made him wonder. I need a emblem for 4 cylinder or something.

So that's my kill story for the night in a slow-ass hardbody. ;) Silly Jeeps.

and they get horrible gas mileage. We had 2 2001 Grand Cherokees with the V8s in them. They got worse mileage than our 97 3/4 ton suburban with the vortec 5.7L motor towing a boat (chevy was towing the boat, not jeep). They also have obscene body roll, freaks me out.

he quit at 90 cuz thats about all it will do. they top out at around 95. and they are in 4 high all the time, thats the main reason why they are so slow and get terrible gas mileage.

Ah hah, that would explain it. Thank goodness for hubs that unlock! Of course, I can't go much over 95 due to lack of power in the hardbody either. Need a turbo to rectify that problem!

well i'm sure you get there a lot quicker. i think i might be able to beat a GC in my b210. my buddy said me and him need to race. he has like a 96 v8 GC. it really is a slow turd. well then he got an avalanche. he had a killer system in the GC. i hope he put it in the avalanche.

a couple years ago, my pickup only had a weber carb (rest stock). i was on highway 30 (nice, straight, four lanes) i was in the fast lane with about three car lengths between me and the car in front of me, we were coming up to a semi in the slow lane, i notice this grand cherokee cruising up in the slow lane to try and make the pass before he gets to the semi. i grab third and get up to the car in front of me to block the GC in behind the semi. GC gets behind me, when we passed the truck he switched lanes then so did i, i snuck back around him doing about a buck ten... i just wanted to prove a point so i backed of of it, then he was dodging through the traffic ahead, he ended up getting stuck in the slow lane again, i just drove passed him and smiled (datsun's got it goin on)

Yeah I love doin shit like that too. I pulled up next to a "RICED" civic (yeah yeah I know) on the freeway, he was probably doing about 90 when I "creeped" up next to him. He takes a quick look at me then had to double look when he saw what it was next to him. Just as he looks at me I step on the gas and pull away from him hard. He tried to jump on it too but had NO chance of catching me. It was freakin hilarious just seeing his face when he looked at me.

The best one yet has to be when a red mustang (it HAD to be a V6) pulled next to me and then gased it then slowed down next to me, at first I didn't think anything of it until he did like 3 more times. I'm thinking "really??" So I figured what the hell, I let him pull ahead about a car length and I can hear that he's really getting on it. I dropped back into 3rd gear and scream by him just as I shift to 4th. I let off the gas and let him catch back up then stomped the gas again just leaving him in the dust. I let off again letting him catch up and let him pass me as I waved. He didn't look too happy. I must say I have been extremely impressed with the KA swap into my 620. It has "surprised" many people.

By the way not trying to thread jack. Just thought I'd toss an extra story in there!!

in my 79 kc I raced one of those and on streets stayed ahead, but he wouldn't give up, so we take it to the freeway and I'm so hard on it on the onramp, truck swaps ends on me, he goes by "Ratsun Salute" while I'm turning around. My 5 speed tranny with auto rear gave me waaay tall gears, so when he tops out at 100 or so, I slam 5th and accelerate to whatever "H" of mph is, pass him like he's going slow, but still get to see him beating his steering wheel in anger because he can't go any faster. "Ratsun Salute" returned. I wish he got pulled over, that would have made me feel better about the celica I beat on the freeway just before the state camaro got me.

i raced a jeep cherokee in the island off road racing club on vancouver island mayb four years ago. soon as the roll cage was done in my truck i took it across the road from my friends place and tried to go up this crazy hill. my friend had a locked front n rear toyota and barely made it up and i had a stock cherokee and couldnt make it so i drove the wuss way to the top and rolled it down the other side...almost went twice sown the hill. when i landed it took 4" by 6" chunks out of my aluminum rims on both tires that landed on the side that hit first. it was sweet, with the 5 point harnesess i didnt even feel a thing. had to go get some spares cause i wrecked two. i blew my motor getting away from some flashing lights attached to pork chops on wheels a different time when it was painted for war. shouldnt have not been driving it on the road...was a fitting end to a beast. ive killed probly 5 jeeps. rolled two and flopped one. jeeps are weak, go toyota unless money is a factor. ive had a couple and they are way more reliable and easy to fix on the trail. 500$ for jeep though is the best value money can buy.

this was my yj, almost got a year out of it, $2000 but way better than a cherokee (it has a frame)
