clara_pellar
Bought a new water pump on ebay last week for my l20b and went to swap it out with the old one and the fan won't fit on the new one. Any Ideas where I can get a new or used fan blade that will fit? The only thing written on the pump is MVO. The bolt holes are 5 1/4'' apart(center to center) Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Looks like the clutch fan for a Z series motor. The Ls are smaller. It's a cheaper re manufactured unit with the less desirable stamped impeller. L20B note the depth of the cavity the impeller is in. Z20E. note the deeper cavity and longer impeller vanes. Both use a smoother cast impeller to reduce cavitation bubbles. The Z series pump is larger internally and moves more water. Cheaper rebuilt ones use a generic stamped impeller. (Z24 below) The clutches and the fan mounts are different and will not swap. L20B (left) and Z series (right) It's possible that the right hand pumps might have been used for air conditioning option cars, don't know. To use that pump you likely need a Z series fan from a 720 or an S110 car . Quote Link to comment
grant
Sorry to hijack the thread, but is there anyway of getting the clutch off the water pump or do I have to get a new pump without the fan option? I'm going electric fan and want to remove the power robbing stk one Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The clutch unit is integral with the pump shaft and cannot be removed without pretty much destroying it. It's possible that the silicon oil has leaked out abd the clutch is slipping excessively. Someone on here unscrewed the front case off and filled it with grease. While this will work in a pinch, I think it is too thick and the fan won't slip enough. Rarely the clutch bearing will seize and the fan will be driven one to one with no slip at all and is reputed to sound like the roar of an F-18. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Skib, isn't there some kind of off set on S30 pulleys compared to L four cylinders? Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
The correct L20B one won't be that cheap. Just go to a wreckers and get the fan from a 720 truck or '80-'83 200sx. Quote Link to comment
greengo
If ur going eletric fan get a 70 72 waterpump from a l16 and the pulley to... no clutch fan... Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
always best to bring the old one in and compare or go to rockauto.com and ck out the photos. as there are 2 types of fans. One for cars or trucks or different years. I never could figure it out as I use the 510 non clutch type. But I do keep all 3 style of fans in case this happens. Quote Link to comment

hawaii_620
If I read the thread correctly... and I'm going with an electric fan setup. Option 1: '70 720 water pump from a L16 + pulley Option 2: 240z water pump + pulley Just wanted to make sure I understood. Quote Link to comment
wildmaninid
I carefully machined the clutch fan off of my water pump on my old l series. You can even do it without a lathe, but just need to be sure you dont cut the shaft too close to the pulley, as it's pressed on the shaft and needs a little shoulder to be okay. Quote Link to comment
