It's my understanding that the early 280 didn't have a 5spd. If it was swapped in it could be anything. It wasn't until 1977 that a 5-speed was added in the US. The 1977-80 5-speed was considered a "wide-ratio", the 1981-83 a "close ratio" transmission. Close ratio transmissions are preferred for road racing as they allow the driver to maintain a tighter rev range between gears compared to wide ratio versions.

Here's how to identify the 280z 5 spd transmissions:

Mike, those are the diesel 720 (SD22/25) ratios.

720 NAPS-Z ratios (by my factory manuals, both my '81 and '83 list this) are:

720 (81+) 5-speed

1st 3.321:1

2nd 2.077:1

3rd: 1.308:1

4th: 1:1

5th 0.833:1

Of course, Canadia could be different.

Only in Canada, eh?

Have to agree with your trans ratios for '81 and '82 2WD. They were also used on the '80 and '81 200sx and known as a wide ratio trans. The only list I have for those years does not agree with others, (transposed numbers but close) I'll go with yours.

The 4X4 ratios for '81 and '82 are:

1st....2nd....3rd...4th..5th

3.592 2.246 1.415 1 0.813 They are the same ratios as the '80 and earlier 620 5spds but with Z bell.

What I posted, was the Diesel and 4X4 ratio for '84 which are:

1st....2nd....3rd...4th...5th

3.592 2.057 1.361 1 0.813 This is also the same ratios used in the '83 to '84 200sx with CA20 motor. (different bell)

For the '84 2WD it's:

1st....2nd....3rd...4th..5th

3.321 1.902 1.308 1 0.833 This is the same ratios used in the '84 to '86 200sx with CA20 motor (different bell).

Thank you Doug.
