mcdatsun
Has anybody tried this? Are these setups any good? Not having to check, clean, adjust points and condensers an more sounds okay to me. http://www.hot-spark.com/1-Hitachi-Distributors.htm Quote Link to comment

mcdatsun
From looking around a bit, the Pertronix seems to be the way to go. I have no experience with any these but it seems like a lot of people on Ratsun have used the Pertronix. Thanks Quote Link to comment
mcdatsun
Oh. It also says the coil must have a primary resistance of 3 Ohms and the stock coil has 1.5 Ohms. Does this mean I need a new coil or can I add a resistor? It's for a 1971 PL521 with an L16. Quote Link to comment

You could tell the 1st start it was better...:P Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
use the stock coil and keep the stock ballast resistor these add up to 3.2 ohms, Just run the stock stuff. it will start better as you still use the bybass wire and you get a hooter spart on START. Using a 3 ohm coil doesnt do this! however if you have a dual point distributor the Pertronix or the Hot Start will NOT fit!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
I would just get pertronix i have been running them in 55 ford truck for 5 years 72 celica for five years and a 70 510 for 2 years not one problem at all ,and the celica my nephew BEATS everyday .The pertronix is only about 15 or 20 dollars more and the ones we bought at Portland swapmeet (NEW ) we payed about $60.00 and no shipping. And yes you have to use single point distributor cause rubbing block on shaft of dual points is smaller. Edited November 15, 2010 by bananahamuck Quote Link to comment
mcdatsun
Great. It is a single point set-up, so thanks for the advice! Pertronix with stock coil it is! Quote Link to comment
FoxyRoadster
just make sure you hook them up to the instructions to the letter, or they will not have a good result. done this once or twice on the bug when not paying attention. Quote Link to comment
mcdatsun
Oops. Its a dual point set up with the secondary set removed. Is there anything for the dual point distributor? Can I switch to a single point set up if I can find one? (Luckily I figured this out before actually buying the Pertronix.) Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
theres one in the parts section with dist for $100. you dont need the coil and ballst with the one he has as you have it already. Quote Link to comment
Ridenbug
however if you have a dual point distributor the Pertronix or the Hot Start will NOT fit!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone have the part number or vehicle source for the distributor you must you have to use the Pertornix in an L16 521? Thx. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
u need a 68-69 single point l16 distributor. You cam make a L20 single point work but need to machine off the ring above the point lobe Quote Link to comment
