DanielC
This will give you a good idea where the shifter ends up in a 521 with a long 5 speed. The picture was taken with the transmission in 2nd gear. I took the original cover plate, cut the hole farther back, and used the metal from the new hole to plug the old hole, with two pieces of scrap the make up the shape difference in the old and new hole. ggzilla
Running an engine at it's torque peak RPM, is where it is most efficient. True. Ideally, this is the speed you like to cruise at. That would give you the best economy. Not true, unless the power needed to cruise coincides with the peak power of the engine at that RPM. But with L16 at the torque peak RPM, it makes far more HP than needed for crusing. Crusing at 2k will give you 50% more fuel economy than the peak torque RPM. This is because pumping friction triples with RPM increase, while power only doubles. This is why when a 5-speed is installed, the fuel economy goes up, even though the engine is running below the the torque peak RPM. The L16 can cruise at 2000 RPM, in fact they are safe for full-throttle starting at 2000 RPM. And part throttle from 800 rpm. The L16 is a very very good engine. So good that you can run it at 5000 RPM all day on the freeway with no problems. Or 2500 RPM which where I'd want it for flat freeway crusing with a 5-speed. If you need to accelerate there is always 4th gear. Quote Link to comment
