hello i currently have a 1971 datsun 2dr coupe with original flare kit on the back

and when i bought it the engine was not stock it has closed chamber heads and flat top pistons

bored 40 over....suposedly it is a l2000 block wich i dont know where that came from but the valve cover just says 1600

anyway i registered to ratsun to try and get to know the car more,,

if anyone could answer some questions i have would be great...

i wanted to know whati should do regarding the condition the engine is it seems like my head gasket blows easily,,should i runn an aftermarket?

and people have been telling me that its to much power for the transmission,,is there any other tranni that would be better that i could use?

where could i find webbers?

heres a pic =)

Not to nit-pick, my friend, but that is a 2dr Sedan. Coupes were not sold in the US. A few are here, but they have been specially imported.

To find out what engine is actually in your car, if you look on the passenger side of the engine, up where the head meets the engine, there should be a raised section of the engine block. It will be stamped with 2 numbers. On the left, it will be engine displacement: L16(1.6), L18(1.8), or L20b(2.0), and on the right is the production number(6 digit). All the valve covers of the L series 4-cylinders will interchange, so you can't go by just that.

As far as the headgasket blowing, it sounds like that's a pretty high compression engine. Flat tops, closed chamber, and larger pistons. Nismo is probably the best placed to get head gaskets, but they are a bit spendy. For your average, run O the mill(normal compression ratio) engine, a Felpro should work fine. I've put about 60k on my L16 with one and no problems.

I don't know who told you what transmission will work and which won't, but if they can't assist you in finding out what engine is in your car, then I seriously question their advice as far as Datsuns go. Unless it's a seriously high powered engine, then pretty much all stock transmissions can handle an L20b's output.

All that to say that before you go start looking for a different tranny and carbs, take a look around, use the "search" function of the forum. There is a wealth of knowledge already within the archives here. The information is nearly endless.

Sounds like maybe you have an L20 engine with an L16 valve cover? Can you see any castings on the engine block?

Also, for pictures use the IMG code that photobucket provides.

Also, I doubt that your engine is producing enough power to damage the tranny.

For a Weber carb, post in the "parts wanted" and you may be able to find one. You'll need to purchase an adapter though.

You positive it has flattop pistons and is a L20 motor? if so and closed chamber head I heard of this situation where they pop head gaskets.

I would think you need really good gas otherwise detonation issues. Bingin ,run on ect...

I would think a motor like that would have sidedrafts on it already. I dont get previos owner putting a Hicomp motor to just run a down draft carb

take photos.

Dont worry about the trans if it aint broke yet

olddatsuns.com ck it out!!!!!!!read it first

there are a few 510s in SD find soembody that can help you local also

a 1600 IS a 510, which, not coincedently has a 1600cc engine.

all the L series 4cyl covers are interchangeable.

#1 its a sedan. a coupe is very different.

if your after dual webers, i have a complete set of dual mikunis avail.

thank you very much for your advice..

and i think i will go with a nismo gasket cant afford to blow it again..

so what do you think about banzai510's advice below us? about tthe detonation issues?

do u think this motor isnt good to drive?

i checcked the label on the block and it says L16....but the owner was telling me thatit is l20.. maybe bwcause its bored? now im confused about my engine

The owner is either :

1/ full of shit

2/ knows less than you... at least you know how to tell the difference.

3/ was told this and is just relaying what he was told

4/ is trying to take advantage of your ignorance.

If it's an L16 it can never be bored and stroked to an L20B size.

Take note that if the owner was wrong or untruthful about this he may also be wrong about the over bore and flat tops too.

If you have a L16 you dont need a fancy NISMO gasket.

L16/18ss may have flatops in there and they are fine. No need to worry above overly high compression.

Now you need to tell us if you have been changin the headgaskets? Or maybe you or your mechanic just got a warped head that you keep putting back on there and the gasket holds for awhile then goes again.
