RadioRedline
Okay brakes questions, asked this before, searched, and found out what to do next etc, etc. but I still seem to have very very soft brakes in my 521. Last night I adjusted the last pair of shoes, reatatched the drum, bolted on the rim, bled the brakes again (hmmm 7th time? ) and let her down. The pedal still has no feeling and or resistance and goes to the floor. if you pump the pedal up you could maybe get a little more feeling in it. I have: Bled the brakes 7 times. Replaced the rear wheel cylinders (Seized) Adjusted all the shoes. (As You've instructed) Replaced the Pass Front Shoe Adjuster (Seized) I have been able to get between 0% - 20% braking out of this thing  So I am thinking tonight I swap in the new Master Cylinder? or is there something i'm missing? Thanks Ratsuners Radio Quote Link to comment
lil89ram50
how about you... just sell it back? hmnmm good idea! yes.. swap the master like i told you the first time. i think the one i sent in a box might be good. just clean it up and try it, if not, sell it cuz its too much work Quote Link to comment

Thanks Ratsuners Radio You adjusted the shoes with the star wheel....after the drum is on.....?....correct? The star wheel is turned until the shoes touch the drum.....then slightly backed off. Pump pedal 4 or 5 times, hold pedal to floor, open bleeder nipple.....close bleeder nipple. Repeat till you have a nice stream of fluid coming out with no air bubbles Quote Link to comment

Repeat till you have a nice stream of fluid coming out with no air bubbles Here's a idea, don't keep calling it a nipple, I think his are becoming chaffed from squeezing them....no radio not those nipples, the ones on the back of the brake drums....ps 521 brakes wont ever be what your used to.. even when properly adjusted the rears will lock up like a e brake under hard braking.. yes you can adjust some of that out but over all braking will be sacrificed...I like where mine are at now stops good..but if i gotta get on them real hard i get loose...actually stopped phenominally when i had a quad in the back... but im not that guy who will drive around with a atv in the back of there truck constantly..this is the result of a single resevoir master... you can put a proportioning valve in but i would wait till you went discs and a z master cylinder i have developed this wierd pulse on braking .... with out discs...i will pull the drums off and chack next time i adjust them... one more thing, u will have to check you adjustment every couple of month's(under daily use) radio....they get out of adjustment..they probably didnt tell you that in oil change school... ok last thing... i think if its between 0-20% you have a much bigger problem... go with "little ram" start with a new master cylinder..especially if he got you one.....and should you even be road testing something that has between 0-20% braking... 1 Quote Link to comment
lil89ram50
jrock, i daily drove the thing for like 4 months on almost no brakes.. seriousley had to pump 7 or 8 times before you had ANYTHING. i got used to it and it was all fine so i never fixed it. i could stop as fast as i needed to, never really took it out of town or on the highway, and was always a slow driver in it i took it all the way to canadian border. think it was like 220 miles or some shit and it made it just fine. also took it on another 600 mile trip over the summer that was fun! so if you are experienced, and TRUST your car, you can drive it. not saying i trust radio driving it, but i do trust my self very much driving it. i also agree with jrock radio, dont test drive till you get complete brakes, or almost complete. 1 Quote Link to comment

Dudeman
I had a similar problem with my brakes, bled and adjusted them a million times and they were still too soft. If you haven't already (I'm not going to sift through this gigantic thread to check)you should bench bleed your master cylinder. If an air bubble is caught in there it will often not bleed through the brake lines. You can do this yourself by removing it and putting it in a vice, and then bleed it through the nipples (lol)that are on the master cylinder. Use a piece of wood or metal for leverage when pushing and holding. Or if you have a buddy to actuate it you can bleed it while its still on the truck. Or a new Master would work, just make sure you bleed that one too! Quote Link to comment
