inline4
I drove about 400 miles before the temp gauge started hanging out at 190... so I've decided to take a lunch break... she made it through the grapevine.... I was worried the most about that Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
I went up the grapevine last June, and my temp gauge was not working. I was worried, but my Datsun made it and passed a couple of newer cars that were pulled over, after overheating. The Datsun just zinged along at 4,500 RPM never complained a bit. inline4
shit shit shit. I think I lost all my transmission fluid. the tranny hesistated going up a hill and made a not so nice noise. I pulled over and had the car towed. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It's an auto?, crap. Heat is just about the only thing that kills them. Check the auto dip stick, I'll bet its brown or dark. The dark color is from worn clutch material. With luck you can empty it and refill with new ATF. To flush the fluid in the converter out remove the return line from the rad and run motor long enough to drain about a pint. Check the tranny dip stick and replace the fluid taken out with fresh. Start the motor again and drain another pint and repeat until the fluid runs clear red. With luck the damage is minimal and you can get some more miles out of it. Never tow with an automatic. Change the fluid every couple of years. If the engine overheats, the tranny will overheat too. Pull over and cool down or reduce speed. If tranny overheats change the fluid as soon as you can afford to. Keep topped up but DO NOT overfill. Keep tranny reasonably clean of dirt on the outside to help dissipate heat. Get and install a heavy duty transmission cooler. The Nissan auto tranny is TOUGH but heat will kill them! Best tip is the transmission cooler. Quote Link to comment

I dunno. funny thing is, while I was waiting for the tow truck... another tow truck driver stopped... and he owns a 510 as well... apparently his buddies are on ratsun :o Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
theory number two is that it could be the rear end, even though i did see fluid coming to the top of the tranny shifter cover. If you were climbing or descending steep hills the fluid will pool toward the front or back and can be whipped into a froth of foam by the spinning parts. This can be sucked into the hydraulic pump causing a loss of pressure. The hydraulic pressure is what keeps the clutches engaged and they will slip causing wear and heat. The foam can also find it's way up the dipstick tube and leak out lowering the fluid level and also leading to over heating. Quote Link to comment

I went up a steep incline (Los Angeles Grapevine) and when this happened, I was going up another incline. no real loud bang was heard, just a stumble and then stutter and metal to metal noise. datzenmike
:o Well check the oil level first and top it up if needed. It's probably fine if it has oil in it. Edited April 20, 2009 by datzenmike Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Check the tranny and the rear end. If one is low or empty that could be the problem. Quote Link to comment
