hessianben
Step 1: steal underpants Step 2: ...? Step 3: profit. That is all. Just kidding. I picked up a junker 620 a few weeks back and have been pulling the morsels that I need to make the 521 freeway compatible. So far- I've got the motor and trans out and cleaned up pretty well. Ordered a timing kit, gasket kit, ect... and will start putting things back together as soon as I'm done cleaning and painting. ...and now, the pics: look at all the cavitation in there! buckshot. not sure if it's wise to use it, but I'm gonna go with it unless I find a cover in better shape. That's going to be the basic color scheme- still need to get the head cleaned up- it will be silver like the timing cover. Thanks for looking! This is the fun part:D Quote Link to comment
fisch
Kool Ben! I appreciate the step by step of the swap. I know an l-20 motor swap is suppose to be easy, but I've never even taken off the valve cover on my l-16, so you rock for documenting it for those of us that have never done it. izzo
man that looks good! what did you use to clean the block and valve cover gasket before you painted it? Quote Link to comment

hessianben
thanks guys! Fisch- Honestly, before I was kind of forced to fix the L16- I'd never even pulled the valve cover on any working engine! I was scared shatless! But, after asking all kinds of stupid questions here, and receiving really helpful info- I dove in, and realized that it's really simple- Yaay no ECU!!! Just watch Hainz' videos, and go to town! It's fun! h2theizzo- I had a ton of cleanup to do before I could even prep- went nuts with engine degreaser, simple green, lots of dollar store scrub brushes, steel wool, and finished with carb cleaner to make sure it dried off completely. headrush from fumes..... phew! Edited February 28, 2009 by hessianben Quote Link to comment

I had the exact same experience with my L16 and look! Now I have done several engine and tranny swaps, rebuilds and other stuff that I would have never attempted before I came to Ratsun. :D You should be proud that you took the chance and dove in like you did. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
maybe clean the front cover and fill the holes(smear flat) with JB Weld or ask a machine shop if there is a coating to put inside the water pump cavity. Believe me if water in oil pan it will be from that front cover. this front cover was perfect and 2 years later look what happen. put it up to a light Edited February 28, 2009 by banzai510(hainz) Quote Link to comment
mike
Lookin good man. Id be leary of that front cover though. If you get yourselelf a soft wire wheel (cup style with lots of thin wires unbraided ) and go after the head it will clean it up real nice. It will take a bit of elbow grease though.
