Justin
So I swapped my dual-points back on the 620, and was sure I did everything correctly until I noticed my idle was near 1500, not 800 like it should be. I'm curious if maybe my plugs are in the wrong order...? (1,3,4,2, but where is 1 located? I believe my #1 is at about 3 o' clock currently on the '73/74 L16 points ignition) It tends to backfire/smoke more now than it did before, so I clearly did something incorrectly when I re-installed my points. Is it possible to have the plugs installed incorrectly and have it still run (it IS a datsun [i say that w/praise on the engines idiot-proof design!!!]) :D Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Set the timing and it will go back down. Quote Link to comment
Justin
Thats what I'm saying though- When I set the timing, the idle speed is WAY up there; so I'm trying to figure out why...? Or are you just saying "next time will be the right time"? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Warm up thoroughly, choke off and turn idle speed screw down so it idles below 1,000 and check/set timing. Once timing is set readjust idle speed and mixture screws for best smooth idle. Quote Link to comment
Justin
Aww, yes. I think I may have forgotten to unplug the vacuum advance when setting it. I'll give it another go!! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You shouldn't have to disconnect the vacuum line. There shouldn't be any vacuum at idle if the throttle plate is shut. If there is vacuum on that line then the throttle is off idle. Stuck open or fast idle cam is on. Quote Link to comment
Justin
Yea, forgetful me! When I swapped on the E.I. distributor, I had to advance the drive spindle gear to get the timing correctly (I'm guessing it's the difference between the L16 and L20 engines??), so now I need to drop the oil pump and move the drive gear back where it needs to be. Quote Link to comment

banzai510(hainz)
(the dizzy should mate with the correct timming plate and mount.) People either have the timming plate flipped or the wrong mount. that the only time you should drop a spindal and move it a tooth, cause later if you install another dist that too will be off if its a different dizzy otherwise every L motor is the same when you time them correct at TDC. the dizzy spindal will be in the 11.28 position http://www.guba.com/general/search?query=hainz&set=5&x=30&y=3 Quote Link to comment
