Son_of_a_Nun
I just swapped out my 4.38 H190 rear differential with my pristine donor truck's 4.38 H190. The damaged one had a howl at speed and a small piñon oil leak. In addition, i found that I must have had water in the axel and pitted the ring gear. Any idea's what to do with the damaged one? Sell, Scrap, Keep/repair? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Garbage. The howl was almost certainly pitting of the bearings and races. 1 Quote Link to comment
flyerdan
That would be good to go into a trailer axle if one was making a box trailer. They don't get the miles that a pickup does (normally), and with some moly gear additive that should quiet it right down, especially since it's not driven. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Never submerge the H-190 in water. When hot the air inside contracts when suddenly cooled and will suck water in through the vent on top. Quote Link to comment

I never understood why people would want a semi floating axle with gears in a trailer. Head down to Tractor Supply and buy a complete trailer axle for about $300. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Don't forget that copper wire was invented by two Datsun owners fighting over a penny in the 1700s. 2 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Too heavy. Remove the R&P and put them on display. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
I guess I wonder if the gears are really pitted at all. I just resurrected a badly rusted 4.22 Sprite gearset that had been sitting in a pool of water in the trunk of a car for years. The bearings were seized up, but once I got the R&P out, I blasted them and they look totally usable. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
They will rust but the high carbon content in much more resistant that regular low carbon steel. Quote Link to comment
