If the steering is severely worn in the middle, straight ahead position, and you adjust all the slack out, it may be too tight at both full turn points. Be sure to raise the front end and check for any tightness anywhere. Generally some slack can always be removed.

 

Grab the idler arm and try to move in any direction but side to side. If it's sloppy you can replace it too.

 

Check and adjust wheel bearing play. Replace if bearings are bad.

 

Check all ball joints for looseness/wear.

 

If you have a pre '78 the king pins may need servicing. I hate KPs.

 

Check all of the above and fix or you'll be wasting money on an alignment.
