Managed to get everything back together, new chain kit, cleaned up and re-gasketed everything. It's running really nicely now.

The old timing chain was about half a link longer.

It's crazy how much it affected the running and tune of the car. I expected some but not this much - had to fully adjust timing and carb tuning to make it run healthy but now it feels sturdy and has more get up to it. Looking forward to hopefully a summer of noise-free driving

As the chain and teeth wear the cam events happen later in relation to engine crankshaft position. This benefits low speed but does not help mid range and  higher speed performance. Nissan allowed for this by providing two extra positions on the cam sprocket to adjust out the slack. Each adjustment position is about 4 degrees. A tooth is 9 degrees so you can adjust this amount. You can visually check the amount of slack by looking at the cam sprocket timing mark and adjusting as needed.

Putting the cam back in proper timing will be noticeable.
