You'll get more views here... https://ratsun.net/classifieds/category/9-datsun-parts/  ... and post will stay active longer. The Z20 mileage option was used from 11 '82 (start of the '83 model year) through '86.5. If just for the engine any of those years will do. Naturally an '83 is best.

Hayne's are good, they actually show pictures of whatever on the vehicle and FSM doesn't. I have both and like Haynes best.Say if you want to see where the fuel pump is,Haynes will show you and FSM doesn't.I paid 75 bucks for my 85 Nissan from the dealer and still have the receipt, years l ago,They are marked up on Ebay.Don't see any 83's on there. Not impressed with the FSM.Iknow that Haynes has many years in one book but Fsm has diesel and Canada which I don't need and the z-22 engine. So if it were eliminated,it would not be as thick and easier to find stuff,Some stuff in the FSM won't be in there.I have a factory set for my wife's 2004 lincoln ls and it has 3 thick books with pictures. They were used from what the dealer's use.I have 2 sets.Bought from Ebay and they sent 2 sets,I paid 70 bucks for them.

Ok thanks Thomas, I realized later on that I'd mistyped the year anyways and tricked myself I to thinking mine was an 83 it's actually an 84 or at least the body is. I'm less sure about the engine since it's not original to the body

The body of the truck lists that it was manufactured in july of 84 with a z24 and a 5 spd transmission and the has the light for 4 wheel drive. But it actually has a z20 engine with a 2 wheel drive 4 spd transmission marked as I have listed on my profile which has stumped everyone so far (I can't remember the designation off the top of my head. ZL71B #4 maybe... so it's possible I determined that this particular engine transmission set up was only on '83 models and was going off that I honestly don't remember it's been so long since I thought about any of that , however I still need to pick up a manual, just because I made it past that particular crisis doesn't mean their won't be another. Lol I'll have to redo my research though and figure out for sure if I typed the year wrong or decided that engine and tranny must have come from an 83

I detest Haynes. The one for the 720 I have is at best 1/2" thick and covers all three types of engines over the 6.5 years where the FSM covers your year only and 3 times the thickness. The one I have only has a 10 page supplement for the '84 and '85 and nothing on the Z24i.  It all, the Haynes is very abbreviated and tries to cover too much that you don't even need to know or can use.

I wouldn't waste too much time thinking.  These manuals are getting more scarce.  Used to be a fair selection on ebay, now fairly limited and mostly too pricey.

Here's a link for the 83 and the 84 manual.  Both are excellent price considering what they have been listing at.

I find the whole thing fascinating though. Occasionally there will be some numeric notations that I don't understand. Next time I run across one I'll try to remember to snap a picture so maybe some one can explain it to me

I am continually kick myself in the rear for not purchasing this thing with absolute alacrity... Best damn purchase I've made since I drove this beater to the house. 🙂 can't stress enough thanks for beating me over the head about that until I pulled the trigger
