I have a transmission that was hooked up to a l20b, that I pulled last night. The total length is around 26 inches, and the only mark that I saw was L1 stamped on the passenger side.

Is it 4 spd or 5? It sounds like a short tail 4spd or a 5spd dogleg. :)

Im pretty sure that it is a 5 speed. I asked the P.O. if it was a dog leg, and he told be it was a standard shift pattern. I though it was a roadster tranny till yesterday.

Does it have a square cover on the bottom?

it does not have a square plate on the bottom.

If it is out of the rig, put it in gear in the upper left-hand position. Turn the input shaft and see which way the output shaft turns (same direction, or opposite?).

Nope. Roadster tranny's have the starter on the left (driver) side.

 

Those pics are interesting. I don't see any place to hook up the speedo. :confused:

The speedo cable is in the pic, hanging off the drivers side by the mount.

That looks like a FS5W71B short tail 5 spd. Here's one on the left from an '80 720. Speedo on the driver's side too. The right tranny is from a '77'79 200sx and is a dogleg.

I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but I searched and couldn't find it, sooooooo....

 

...how does the FS5W71B short tail 5 speed rate vs the regular long tails from the 280ZX's for upgrading a 4 speed? Are they common?

That looks like a FS5W71B short tail 5 spd. Here's one on the left from an '80 720. Speedo on the driver's side too. The right tranny is from a '77'79 200sx and is a dogleg.

I would love to have a dozen of those short FS5W71Bs. They should fit the 510 no prob. I've only ever heard of them in the 720s with Z bells on them. Seen a lot of 720 5 spds but never a short one. All you would need is an L bell to switch it from Z to an L.

How do you change bellhousings since they are a one peice trans?

Actually they're a 2-piece- main transmission case and extension housing. You "change bells" by replacing the guts of one into the case of another. Easier to find the right gearbox to start with, but some folks like a challenge...
