tdskip
First of all, best wishes for a Happy New Year to all. Looking to install a proper coolant temp gauge, would pulling this off the car and tapping it for a threaded sender be a good approach? https://www.nissanraceshop.com/product/genuine-jdm-radiator-upper-water-neck-outlet-s14-sr20det/#prettyPhoto Thanks! Eric
yes thats a perfect location for a temp. sensor. I had a temp. sensor in that same outlet on my sr20det. Quote Link to comment
tdskip
Thanks Eric! 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Where's the thermostat on that? If after the thermostat it's no good and will only read something when the thermostat opens. Quote Link to comment
Eric
The thermostat is on the other end of the engine. Quote Link to comment
tdskip
Thanks gentlemen Quote Link to comment

Eric
the part in the picture is the outlet to the radiator. sits on the highest point of the motor end feeds the top of he radiator. the thermostat is on the other end. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Sorry, it's so different I'm lost. Quote Link to comment
Eric
number 4 is the part which started this post. number 16 is thermostat. Now that i look at it you might be right. water is going the other way around! Quote Link to comment
tdskip
Uh oh - I already drilled it. I am getting good radiator flow, but the downside to this approach is I won’t get a good reading until the thermostat opens? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You'll be reading nothing till the thermostat opens and then the cooled water coming from the radiator slowly becoming warmer as the system warms up. It will never read what the engine is at because of the cooling fans. Needs to be behind the thermostat on part 10 in the diagram. The threaded hole on the other (return) pipe is possibly for the temp sensor that turns on the fans. Quote Link to comment
tdskip
Ugh, but THANK you for catching it! Quote Link to comment

tdskip
Yep, not end of the world Eric. Maybe use #14 as the location? Quote Link to comment
Eric
14 is a temperature sensor already, thats for the temperature display or the ecu, removing this sensor could make the display not working or the ecu missing input. why do you need an additional temp. sensor? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
That's for telling the ECU the temperature of the air entering the engine. Quote Link to comment
Eric
no, its a coolant temp. sensor not for air. http://nissan4u.com/parts/200sx/el_s14/1999_12/type_1/exhaust_and_cooling/water_pump_cooling_fan_thermostat_water_hose_and_piping/illustration_2/ Edited January 5, 2020 by Eric Quote Link to comment
tdskip
Thank you for the discussion gentleman. Eric – all I have is an idiot light now and I want to get a proper gauge on it so I can judge the effectiveness of the radiator that I installed as well as just waiting to know what’s going on with the engine. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
14 is probably for the air in the intake. The ECU needs to know the air temperature in order to compute the mixture. 8 says coolant temperature sender and it's in the thermostat housing. The problem is this sender probably isn't for a gauge. Again it's probably for the ECU to know how warmed up the engine is. Quote Link to comment
Eric
an sr20 has 2 coolant temp. sensors, one for a gauge and 1 for the ecu. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yes, I don't know which is which. Quote Link to comment
tdskip
Let me check the wiring colors to try and figure out which is which. Thanks again for all the help (and hope you both had a good weekend) 1 Quote Link to comment
Spiff
8 is for ecu, 14 is for the temp gauge in the dash. SR uses a maf so doesn't have an air temp sensor Quote Link to comment
